MAS-AirAsia rationalisation to dent KLIA growth

PETALING JAYA (Feb 7, 2012): The route rationalisation by Malaysia Airlines (MAS), AirAsia and AirAsia X is expected to put a dent in passenger air traffic growth at the KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang this year, industry observers say.

They pointed to the national carrier's suspension of eight routes including those from KLIA to Dubai, Surabaya, Johannesburg and Rome, as part of its new business plan to turn around by 2013.

Last December, MAS had said it would cut back its available network capacity by 12% in 2012 for an expected gain of RM220 million to RM302 million, trimming its capacity in the long-haul segment to focus on the medium- and short-haul routes following a share swap deal with AirAsia.
Apart from the eight international flights out of KLIA, MAS has also suspended or will suspend four regional routes from Kota Kinabalu to Osaka, Perth, Tokyo and Seoul.

AirAsia X, the budget long-haul affiliate of AirAsia, had also announced plans to withdraw its flights to Mumbai, Delhi, Paris and London from KLIA between Jan 31 and March 30 this year.

"It is not surprising why Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is projecting only a 6.6% increase in passenger growth this year, despite recording a double-digit growth of 10.6% in 2011, as MAS and AirAsia X make deeper cuts to their international flight schedule and foreign airlines are not putting additional frequencies or launching new destinations to and from KLIA as fast," an industry observer told SunBiz.

Last week, MAHB told Bursa Malaysia it was projecting passenger movements at KLIA to grow by 6.6% based on the country's indicative 5-6% gross domestic product growth.

"The passenger growth would, in general, depend on Malaysia's and global economic performance, in particular the Asia-Pacific region," it had said, but did not elaborate.

Passenger air traffic at KLIA has slipped to single-digit growth since August last year. According to data released by MAHB, the number of passengers passing through KLIA grew only by single-digit percentages — 9.7%, 8.7%, 5.6%, 6.4% and 5.6% in August, September, October, November and December, respectively, from a year ago.

In contrast with figures in January-July 2011, monthly passenger traffic at KLIA posted double-digit growth, ranging from a low of 10.5% to a high of 16% from the same period in 2010.

Nevertheless, KLIA managed to show double-digit growth of 10.6% to 37.7 million passengers for the full year 2011, thanks to healthy passenger growth in the first seven months.

MAS took over the jet services of its subsidiary Firefly in October last year, which saw several domestic routes from KLIA to points in Sabah and Sarawak, namely Sibu, Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, suspended.

However, MAS will reintroduce the Kuala Lumpur-Sandakan direct flight on Feb 18.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is projecting only a 6.6% increase in passenger growth this year
KLIA managed to show double-digit growth of 10.6% to 37.7 million passengers for the full year 2011
