Top Ten Private Jet Routes in Europe Today
According to the survey compiled by European travel agencies, private jet routes between Geneva, Paris, Nice, Moscow, Rome, and Milan are the busiest on the continent. From the routine standpoint of travel geography, this is simply a reflection of how busy is the heart of European continent when it comes to business, leisure, and politics.
However, the city of London, formerly the heart of world’s commerce, is not on the list. The absence of usual German destinations such as Munich is also noteworthy. On the other hand, Moscow has joined the list, reflecting the increased purchasing power among the Russian nationals en-masse.
The most frequented private jet route in Europe is from Aeroport International de Geneve in Switzerland to Aeroport de Paris-Le Bourget in France, according to the survey, based on flights on board privately owned aircraft and jets chartered for individual connections, done by Engel & Volkers Aviation, an aircraft broker, in conjunction with market research company WINGX Advance.
In 2016, private jets flew this route a total of 1,647 times. According to Bart Boury, CEO of Engel & Volkers Aviation, “This route is used a lot by business people in particular”.
Ranked in second place is the route in the opposite direction, from Paris-Le Bourget to Geneva, numbering 1,571 flights total. The airport Paris-Le Bourget came to prominence back in 1927, when Charles Lindbergh landed there after his historic transatlantic solo crossing
Third and fourth places in the ranking are held by the local routes within France, namely from Aeroport Nice Cote d’Azur to Aeroport de Paris-Le Bourget, making up 1,020 flights total, and, in the reverse direction, from Paris-Le Bourget to Nice, constituting 974 flights total. These connections are especially popular with French nationals who work in Paris and own a second home on the Cote d’Azur. “Of all the routes ranked in the top 10, the connection from Nice to Paris saw the biggest increase in flights compared to 2015 - by 16 percent in fact,” Boury explained.
The French Riviera is also a desirable location for second homes among affluent Russian nationals. Accordingly, fifth and sixth places in the ranking are occupied by private jet flights from the Nice airport to Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow – a total of 898 flights, and, in the other direction, from the Russian capital to Aeroport Nice Cote d’Azur, a total of 874 flights. The airport in Nice is the third largest in France after Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly.
In seventh place is the inner Italian route from Aeroporto di Milano Linate to Aeroporto di Roma-Ciampino, a total of 850 flights. “The route from Milan to Rome is in demand as it connects Italy’s two financial centers. The private jet flights are therefore business-related flights in most cases,” says Boury. The airport Roma-Ciampino opened back in 1916, making it one of the oldest airports in the world still in operation.
Eighth place in the ranking of Europe’s most popular private jet routes is the connection from Geneva airport to Aeroport Nice Cote d’Azur, a total of 815 flights. The route in the reverse direction - from Nice to Geneva - comes in ninth place at 813 flights. Aeroport International de Geneve is the second largest airport in Switzerland after Zurich Airport.
The route from Roma-Ciampino to Milano Linate makes the final place in the ranking, at 797 flights total. As these figures demonstrate, the heart of old Europe continues to be the busiest and most lucrative geographic location for private jet routes. However, with downgrade in popularity of traditional English and German travel routes, and with introduction of the new Russian, Moscow bound destination, there is a definitive change in private jet route travel geography and clientele.
