Star Alliance CEO promises 'completely different' T2 experience

Passengers travelling through London Heathrow's new Terminal 2 will encounter a "completely different" customer experience, according to Star Alliance's chief executive.

Mark Schwab said passengers entering the terminal, which opens in June, will be greeted by state-of-the-art technology.

He told Business Traveller: "What you will see when you walk into the building will be a whole row of kiosks for check-in and printing baggage tags. So you may have checked yourself in on your mobile device, or brought your printed boarding pass, but you still need your bag tagged.

"The next line is a fast-drop area — show your boarding pass and your passport, and staff will take your bag and introduce it into the system. First and business class customers, as usual, will have their check-in areas to use if they want."

Star Alliance represents almost a quarter of the traffic flowing in and out of Heathrow and, with the exception of Aer Lingus, Virgin Atlantic Little Red and Germanwings, T2 will be dedicated to Star airlines, making transfers easier for passengers.

Schwab said: "Right now we have 22 of our carriers operating out of Heathrow. For us to be able to consolidate our operations from three different terminals into brand new, state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility is hugely important to the alliance and the individual airlines."

Earlier this month, it was announced that Colombian carrier Avianca was to launch the UK's first direct flights to Bogota from Heathrow in July, upping the number of Star Alliance airlines that will fly out of Terminal 2 to 23 (see news,February 5).

Unlike in Los Angeles International Airport, where Star Alliance opened a joint lounge last September for passengers flying with eight of its carriers (to read a review, click here), T2 will not be following suit.

Schwab said: "We have four big airlines with big operations at Heathrow and each one of them is building a lounge in their respective part of the departure area — we will have Lufthansa, United, Air Canada and Singapore Airlines.

"There will also be an arrivals lounge from United for everybody. Star gold members can go to any lounge they want to, whichever is closest to their departure gate."

From a global point of view, Star Alliance is looking to expand its route network to "points on the map that we need to add", such as India, which will be covered when Air India is expected to become its 29th carrier in the summer, and the 24th to fly out of T2 (at the moment it departs from T4).

Terminal 2's retail line up complete

Terminal 2 brands set to deliver a new experience for passengers

Passengers travelling through Heathrow’s new Terminal 2 will have their pick of the world’s best shops and restaurants confirmed by Heathrow today.

Each of the 64 shops and restaurants has been carefully selected for Terminal 2 following passenger requests and a study of the latest industry trends which called for more premium restaurant experiences and a greater number of British brands. Those confirmed include Cath Kidston, London’s Pride by Fullers, Bottega Veneta, Michael Kors and a new restaurant created by four local female chefs - The Gorgeous Kitchen.
The new Terminal 2, known as ‘The Queen’s terminal’ will build on Heathrow’s record as the world’s best airport for shopping and restaurants when it opens on 4 June this year. Heathrow’s passengers have voted the airport’s shops and restaurants the best in the world for three consecutive years through the independent survey run by Skytrax.
Heathrow is home to some of the world’s most successful retail space, with outlets at the airport delivering annual net sales of over £1.8 billion and sales per square meter of £30,052. Every pound generated through the airport’s retail goes to reducing airport costs to airlines and in turn the ticket prices for passengers.
The competitive two-year tender process resulted in more than five proposals for each position, surpassing the number of bids received for Terminal 5 opening.
Max Vialou-Clark, Heathrow’s retail director said:
‘Terminal 2’s opening will introduce Heathrow passengers to a whole new experience when they fly with us. From a restaurant created by Michelin-starred Heston Blumenthal to everyone’s favourite, John Lewis - my team has really pushed the boundaries of what is expected from an airport.’

New United Club and United Global First Lounge for premium customers unveiled at Heathrow

United Airlines has previewed two spectacular new lounges for premium customers – the United Global First Lounge and the United Club – at London Heathrow's new Terminal 2 : The Queen’s Terminal.

United will be the first airline to operate from Terminal 2 when it opens on June 4, 2014, bringing its 17 daily Heathrow flights – currently split between Terminals 1 and 4 – 'under one roof.' Later this year, the operations of United’s 22 Star Alliance partners serving Heathrow will progressively move to Terminal 2, the alliance’s new home at the airport.

'We’re very excited about our move to Terminal 2 and these extensive and sophisticated lounges reflect the importance of Heathrow to United’s global route network,' said Jake Cefolia, United’s vice president of Atlantic & Pacific sales. 'We operate more flights to and from Heathrow than any other U.S. airline, and many of our most valued customers travel regularly on the 17 daily flights that link London with six of our U.S. hubs. These lounges will enable us to provide these customers with the best levels of service on the ground as well as in the air.'

Lounges Location

Together, the two lounges occupy 22,000 square feet (2,043 square meters) of space and are located near the airline’s gates in Terminal 2’s satellite concourse. Both facilities feature floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the airfield, luxurious décor and vintage aviation-themed artwork. Both will offer complimentary food, beverages (including alcoholic beverages) and Wi-Fi. Seating areas and furnishings are conducive to either relaxing or getting work done, with abundant power outlets.

Her Majesty The Queen set to officially open the new Terminal 2 on 23 June 2014

Heathrow reveals Richard Wilson’s Slipstream at the new Terminal 2 : The Queen’s Terminal

Heathrow today unveiled Slipstream, by renowned British artist Richard Wilson, which is set to become one of Britain’s most viewed public sculptures, seen by 20 million passengers a year.

Slipstream by Richard Wilson RA was commissioned by Heathrow to welcome passengers to the UK’s hub airport and has been curated by public arts agency Futurecity. Weighing 77 tonnes and measuring 78 metres, the sculpture’s twisting aluminium form is inspired by the world of aviation and captures the imagined flight path of a small stunt plane. For Wilson, the work is a response to the artistic challenge of capturing movement and a metaphor for travel; it aims to capture velocity, acceleration and deceleration in its twists and turns.

Wilson is one of Britain’s most renowned sculptors and draws inspiration from the worlds of engineering and construction. Like so many of Wilson’s large scale works, Slipstream responds to and is integral to the surrounding architecture. The work is supported by four structural columns and is suspended 18 metres above the ground as it carves through the entrance court of Terminal 2.
The old Terminal 2, opened by The Queen in 1955, was demolished after 54 years of service. It was Heathrow's first terminal, originally called the "Europa Building" and was designed to deal with 1.2 million passengers a year. By the time it closed in 2009 it was handling 8 million passengers a year. Heathrow has invited Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh to officially open her new Terminal on the 23 June.

The new Terminal 2 is part of the Heathrow’s on-going transformation and is a £2.5 billion development by luis vidal + architects which has taken five years to complete. As well as a spacious new Covered Court connecting the main transport links to the Terminal, the building is characterised by an undulating steel framed roof which floods the building with natural light. Spanish architect Luis Vidal is internationally renowned for his ambitious airport designs and the objective for Terminal 2 was to create a space that would be a destination in itself. Passenger experience and comfort have been placed at the centre of the design process which emphasises natural lighting and intuitive way-finding.

Terminal 2 will be a new international gateway for the UK, a home to 23 Star Alliance airlines as well as Aer Lingus, Virgin Atlantic Little Red and Germanwings carriers.

Slipstream will be the first and last impression of the United Kingdom for passengers travelling through Terminal 2 and this ambitious sculpture took over two years to create. To make it a reality, Wilson enlisted structural engineers Price & Myers and specialist Hull-based fabricators Commercial Systems International (CSI). The sculpture was manufactured in Hull in 23 giant sections where it formed part of the successful bid for Hull City of Culture 2017. It was then transported, piece by piece, to Heathrow in June 2013.

Richard Wilson commented “After over two years of hard work I am delighted to see Slipstream finally unveiled in Heathrow’s new Terminal 2 : The Queen’s Terminal today. Slipstream is my largest sculpture to date and I have enjoyed the challenge of working on such a monumental scale and also working alongside such inventive engineers to realise this work. Slipstream is a metaphor for travel, it is a time-based work that responds to its location and I feel honoured that Slipstream will go on to be seen by millions of visitors travelling to and from the UK each year”.

Concept and lead architect, Luis Vidal commented, “Terminal 2 was designed to be a destination in itself. LVA’s objective was to attract passengers to arrive earlier than their departure time in order to enjoy the welcoming atmosphere and experience the wide range of amenities, services and retail Terminal 2 has to offer.”

Heathrow’s Development Director, John Holland-Kaye commented, “We are proud that Her Majesty The Queen has agreed to officially open Terminal 2 : The Queen's Terminal, the latest stage in Heathrow’s £11billion transformation. The new Terminal 2 stands on the site of the previous Queen’s Building, and the official opening on 23 June recognises the long association with Her Majesty The Queen. We are also very proud that the commission for Slipstream, which will be a feature of the new terminal, was won by distinguished British artist, Richard Wilson, working with a British architectural company, Price & Meyers, and an engineering company, CSI, based in Hull, all truly representing the best of modern Britain .”

Mark Schwab, CEO Star Alliance said, “In June this year we will ring in a new era for our customers, member carriers and employees at London Heathrow. The purpose built Terminal 2 : The Queen’s Terminal - will be our home and will offer a superior travel experience to our customers, create new business opportunities for our member carriers and provide an improved working environment for employees.”

With separate areas for first and business passengers, seating 50 and 158 respectively, the lounge contains living rooms, dining rooms, a bar, productivity pods, showers and a "roving host service".

First class features a self-service buffet and à la carte dining, the latter with five different menus per day, with at least two menus available at any one time, while business class features a self-service buffet.
The lounge is the third to feature SIA's new "home away from home" design, following SIA facilities in Sydney (see news, December 2013) and Hong Kong (see news, November 2014).
