London Stansted plans major expansion

London Stansted proposed arrivals hall.

London’s third airport, Stansted, is to build a separate arrivals building to allow for future expansion.
The £130 million ($160 million) building will take around three years to complete.
Stansted Airport, some 35 miles northeast of central London, is largely used by low-cost carriers (LCCs), and is the largest base for Ireland-based Ryanair. UK LCC easyJet is another major resident.
The airport’s operator, Manchester Airports Group (MAG), which also operates the Manchester, East Midlands and Bournemouth airports, says Stansted has the greatest number of European destinations of any UK airport.
The airport has a current throughput of around 24 million passengers, and is currently the busiest single terminal airport in the UK.
The plan being submitted to local planning authorities focuses on providing new facilities that will allow Stansted to grow to its current planning limit of 35 million passengers and, potentially, up to the airport’s single-runway design capacity of 43 million.
The proposed 34,000 m² (366,000 ft[SUP]2[/SUP] building will span three levels and will be constructed adjacent to the current terminal. It will enable the current building to be reconfigured and dedicated entirely to departing passengers. The new building will have a larger immigration and baggage reclaim area than at present; new retail facilities; and a public forecourt.
Creating a new, separate, arrivals building rather than extending the existing structure is intended to allow construction to proceed with the minimum of operational disruption.
“Since MAG acquired the airport in early 2013, we have turned Stansted into one of the UK’s fastest growing airports,” airport CEO Andrew Cowan said. “[We] have already invested over £150 million to update our terminal and satellite facilities; created 1,000 more jobs; added over 40 new destinations; and increased passenger numbers by nearly 7 million.”
