Singapore 2008: Indonesia's Lion orders 56 more 737-900ERs
By Leithen Francis

Indonesia’s Lion Air has ordered 56 more Boeing 737-900ERs, lifting its firm commitments to the type to 178.

At the Singapore Airshow today Lion president director Rusdi Kirana signed the firm order for 56 more 737-900ERs. The deal also includes purchase rights for another 50.

Rusdi told ATI after the signing ceremony that the first delivery from this latest order will occur in 2014. He says the carrier already operates nine 737-900ERs in Indonesia from its initial order.

By year-end the number of Lion’s 737-900ERs will reach 15 and next year it will be taking delivery of one per month and phasing out its 737-300s, 737-400s, Boeing MD-80s and MD-90s, he says.

Lion wants to have 60 737-900ERs in Indonesia and the rest will be for airline joint ventures it plans to start in Australia, Thailand and other Asian countries.

Singapore 2008: Eclipse breaks into India with very light jet deal
By Andrew Doyle

Very light jet manufacturer Eclipse Aviation has made its first inroad into India with a deal to supply New Delhi-based Club One Air with 10 Eclipse 500s. Four aircraft are due to be delivered this year and the remaining six in 2009.

"I think it's a very affordable solution," says Club One Air managing director Manav Singh. "Nobody has a plane that's as affordable to acquire and operate as the Eclipse," he adds.

Club One Air, India's first fractional ownership company, already offers nine larger business jets for charter as the country's largest non-scheduled operator, but Singh says the potential customer base for these services is limited to around 10,000 people.

"We plan to get the middle class of the country to start chartering aircraft," he says. "We are in negotiations to buy a substantially larger fleet and I do hope to conclude those negotiations before the end of the year."

Although Eclipse 500 operations will initially be focused on Delhi and Mumbai, Singh says he has identified "over 25 small industrial towns" that could eventually be served by charter services. He is also looking at adopting a similar "seat on demand" model to that used by DayJet in the USA. The Eclipse 500s will be operated by a separate company promoted by Singh.

As part of the deal with Eclipse, Club One Air has the "opportunity" to take responsibility for supporting Eclipse 500 operators in the region. Singh says the company also wants to become a distributor for Eclipse and offer Eclipse 500s for fractional ownership.

Eclipse is exhibiting a UK-based Eclipse 500 at the Singapore Airshow, which made 14 stops during its journey to Asia including, an appearance at the ABACE show in Hong Kong earlier this month.

Eclipse vice president marketing and sales Mike McConnell says the manufacturer is close to reaching a one-aircraft-per-day production rate. "We do intend to get to two-aircraft-per-day in 2008," he adds.

Eclipse delivered 98 of 104 aircraft built in 2007 following the fastest jet aircraft production ramp up in history. McConnell says total sales are approaching 2,700

Korean ordina 3 A380

Singapore 2008: Korean Air orders three more A380s
By Nicholas Ionides

Korean Air (KAL) has ordered three more Airbus A380s, lifting its firm commitments to the ultra-large type to eight.

A spokesman for the SkyTeam alliance carrier says from Seoul that the three additional A380 passenger aircraft will be delivered in 2012 and 2013. He adds that the carrier’s first five A380s will be delivered in 2010 and 2011.

KAL placed its first order for five A380s in 2003, when it also took three options. It selected the Engine Alliance GP7200 as the powerplant for the first five aircraft but the spokesman says he is not able to confirm whether the same engine will power the three additional aircraft.

Singapore 2008: Bombardier hopes for CSeries launch this year
By Leithen Francis

Bombardier will have to launch the CSeries programme this year if it is to achieve its entry into service target of 2013.

The regional aircraft maker’s VP of marketing and communications, Trung Ngo, stopped short of saying when the aircraft maker would launch the CSeries programme but says “a decision has to be taken in 2008” if it is to meet the 2013 entry into service target. Trung was speaking to Flight today at the Singapore Airshow.

He says Bombardier has already completed the negotiations with engine maker Pratt & Whitney on the technical and commercial terms for the engine deal.

Rolls-Royce amplierà in maniera significativa la sua base MRO a SIN

Singapore 2008: R-R's MRO in Singapore unveils massive expansion
By Leithen Francis

Rolls-Royce’s engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) business in Singapore, Singapore Aero Engine Services (SAESL), has secured some land adjacent to its current site and will be using it for expansion.

A new 12,000m² two-storey building will be built on the site at a cost of S$60 million ($42 million), says SAESL outgoing CEO, John Horsburgh, who is leaving to become chief operating officer of the aircraft engine assembly plant R-R is building at Singapore’s Seletar airport.

Today R-R and SAESL’s other joint venture partners – Singapore Airlines Engineering and Hong Kong Aero Engine Services – held a ground breaking ceremony to promote SAESL’s latest expansion and to announce that Gary Nutter has become SAESL’s CEO.

SAESL’s new building, which will connect to the existing building, will become operational in June 2009, says Nutter, who was previously business director of R-R’s Aero Repair and Overhaul division in Derby.

The expansion will increase SAESL’s total floor space to 30,000m² and increase its work capacity to 250 engines per year from 200, he says.

SAESL maintains Trent 500, Trent 700, Trent 800 and Trent 900 engines. The Trent 900 powers the Airbus A380 and Nutter says it has secured Trent 900 customers: Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas Airways, China Southern Airlines and Etihad Airways.

SAESL will also be handling overhaul work on Trent XWB engines used to power Airbus A350XWB aircraft, adds Nutter.

Nutter also says the expansion of SAESL will increase SAESL’s workforce to around 800 employees from just over 700 now.

Horsburgh says SAESL has two work shifts – the first shift starts at 07:00hr, while the second shift starts at 16:15hr and ends at 01:15 the next day.

If the company needs to increase capacity further “it could go to a third shift if it needed to”, he adds.
