A strike by security personnel over wages has grounded 47 flights at Frankfurt's international airport Friday and may lead to further disruptions in the course of the day, an airport spokesman said.

"So far the punctuality of the departing flights has been quite good though we will have to see how that changes," a spokesman for Europe's third-largest airport said.

The airport has issued an advisory telling departing passengers to not come to the airport unless they have confirmed flight details with their airlines because checkpoints aren't sufficiently staffed to handle the regular passenger volume.

Frankfurt airport handles anywhere between 110,000 to more than 200,000 passengers a day and runs an average of 1,300 daily flights, the spokesman said. The airport has taken measures to make the situation as tolerable as possible for the passengers, passing out refreshments and using personnel to direct traffic, but passengers should expect longer waiting times, he said. Transfer and incoming passengers will be less affected by delays.

Deutsche Lufthansa AG LHA.XE -0.19% has told passengers flying within Germany Friday to travel instead by train with national railway operator Deutsche Bahn. Passengers can exchange their electronic ticket for a travel voucher on the Lufthansa website or at a Lufthansa check-in counter. Any difference in fares will be reimbursed by Lufthansa, an airline spokesman said.

The strike of security workers is aimed at increasing pressure on the federation of security firms, BDSW, to negotiate a higher collective wage agreement for some 7,000 security employees in the Hessen, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland regions. About 5,000 of those workers are employed at Frankfurt airport.

Currently, security employees who run baggage and passenger screening in these regions are paid between €10.20 ($14.00) and €13 an hour. The union is demanding a base hourly wage of €16 for all airport security staff in the three states, regardless of duties or location.

The strike at Frankfurt Airport is expected to last from the early morning until late evening and will affect staff responsible for duties like passenger, freight and baggage screening.

Wednesday, trade union Verdi called a strike at Frankfurt-Hahn airport, a smaller regional airport outside Frankfurt serving mostly low-cost carriers. BDSW negotiator Rainer Friebertshaeuser criticized the strike on the federation's website. He said the BDSW has put forward a possible wage increase of more than 20%.

A Verdi spokeswoman said no more security strikes are planned in the Hessen, Rheinland-Palatinate and Saarland regions before the union and BDSW meet March 5 for further negotiations.
