JEDDAH: A Saudi Arabian Airlines plane carrying 79 passengers and crew members made an emergency landing after the pilot detected smoke in the cockpit. The plane was on a regular flight from Sharourah in the southern Najran province to Riyadh.

“All passengers and members of the crew disembarked safely while a female passenger was treated for a nervous breakdown. She was administered first aid and then taken to hospital,” said Khaled Al-Khaibary, spokesman of the General Authority of Civil Aviation.

Eighteen minutes after take off, the captain of Flight 1887 informed the Sharourah airport control tower at 9:20 a.m. that there was smoke in the cockpit and the plane needed to return to the tarmac.

An informed source at Sharourah Hospital told Arab News that the woman, who fainted as a result of fear, left hospital after receiving necessary treatment.

Airport workers at Sharourah said security officers as well as firefighters and first-aid officials had dealt with the emergency situation professionally.

“Most passengers were from Sharourah,” they said, adding that Saudia has made arrangement for continuing their journey to Riyadh. But most passengers preferred to return home to meet their families following a frightful flight. Soon after landing the Embraer aircraft was taken to the maintenance center.
