Scandinavian Airline Systems is expanding. Two days after it reached agreement with unions over longer working weeks and reductions in pay, the airline announced in an email to customers that it would open 45 new routes by next summer.
The company has gone on the offensive, after budget carrier Norwegian aggressively moved into long-haul announcing direct flights to New York and Bankok.
SAS said, Monday, it was opening a new route to San Francisco from its Danish hub in Copenhagen’s Kastrup airport. But the additional routes suggest SAS is responding to complaints from customers.
Travellers in Norway and Sweden have long complained that too many flights are routed through Kastrup. This looks set to change, although SAS are keeping their cards close to their chest. Spokeman Tormod Santstø said that there will be new direct routes from all Scandinvian countries.
“Many of them are aimed at holiday destinations, and business destinations are on their way too,” he told VG Nett Wednesday. The details of these routes will not be officially announced until Friday, however.
“It’s important we show that we haven’t just given up, that we’re building the company for the future. We’re looking forward to showing off the new routes. At times like last week there was an increased number of people contacting us and asking about the company’s future. Since that was solved, we’ve had a huge number of declarations of support.”
The troubled airline’s woes may not be over, neverthless. Today’s Aftenposten reported its costs remain 50% higher per passenger mile than rival Norwegian’s even after restructuring.
