RYANAIR ANNOUNCE ALICANTE CUT OF 1.5 MILLION PASSENGERS
O'Leary made the announcement in Alicante today (Tuesday).

Ryanair have said that they will cut summer services equating to over 1.5 million customers in Alicante airport

Among the 18 routes cancelled a number have proved to be extremely profitable including those to and from Madrid, Palma, Seville and London Gatwick.

The low-cost airline announced the cuts as a result of the controversy over the use of airport jetways, which beganlast April. Airline President Michael O'Leary quantifies the number of passengers lost to El Altet as approximately 1.5 million, which translates to a cost to AENA of about 30 million euro to October next year. He went on to say that Ryanair will strengthen its business in Palma.

Only a successful appeal to the Commercial Court in Elche, the results of which are due to be announced next February, will see Ryanair restore their cancelled routes.

In a briefing given on Tuesday in Alicante, Michael O'Leary said that Ryanair has reduced the number of aircraft based in El Altet during the winter months from eleven to two, and that next summer he will retain five aircraft at the airport, six fewer than last summer.

The reduction in the number of aircraft will reduce the summer frequency of flights to Bergamo, Gothenburg and Knock, and maintain the reductions imposed this winter on the routes to Baden Baden, Bristol, Wze Düsseldorf, Edinburgh, Eindhoven, Frankfurt HHN, Glasgow Pik, Cracow; Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, London Stansted, Maastricht, Manchester and Stockholm SKV.

He said that the cuts in Alicante "will not cause losses for Ryanair, which will move operations to other airports such as Palma, Germany and Poland, but for AENA it will lead to a loss of about 30 million euro per year in benefits to Alicante airport.
