Hedging hell for Ryanair

May 9, 2008

So, Ryanair's fuel costs are about to soar as their hedged fuel price of $68 a barrel comes to an end next week. With oil current trading around the $100 a barrel mark, the low cost airline is going to get hit hard on fuel costs.

Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary is already taking action by cutting executive bonuses and has said he will have to cut costs elsewhere as the airline does not charge fuel surcharges.

Could this mean the end for some of of the carrier's less profitable routes?

As oil prices soar to an unprecedented level off $100 a barrel, Ryanair have re-iterated their guarantee of no fuel surcharges ever and in accompaniment to the guarantee, have announced a cheap flights sale, giving away 2 million seats for £10.

Ryanair, Europe’s largest low cost airline took time to issue a statement today to confirm their stance as a guarantee to their customers. Ryanair’s Head of Communications, Peter Sherrard said: “Europe’s high fare airlines are gouging passengers with fuel surcharges of €70 and €80, which has already resulted in the conviction of British Airways and Virgin Atlantic for price fixing. The travelling public recognises the crude scams of these fuel surcharging airlines which is why almost 60 million passengers this year will choose Ryanair, the only airline in Europe to guarantee the lowest fares and no fuel surcharges ever.”

Ryanair is currently the only low cost airline to offer the no fuel surcharge guarantee.
