Ryanair to close Lauda unit on 29 May

Ryanair Group has followed through on its threat to close Lauda's Vienna base after failing to reach an agreement on cost reductions.
The airline's Airbus A320 base in Austria will close on 29 May, resulting in the loss of 300 jobs.
Lauda says it "deeply regrets" the closure of the base and places the blame directly on the Vida union.
"Shamefully, the Vida union ignored the wishes of over 95% of pilots and 70% of cabin crew at Lauda's A320 Vienna base and has destroyed over 300 well paid jobs," state Lauda joint chief executives Andreas Gruber and David O'Brien. "Lauda also deplores the inaction of the Austrian government which could have used its €800 million [$873 million] state aid to Lufthansa subsidiary Austrian Airlines to require Vida to save the jobs of Lauda's A320 Vienna crews."
Ryanair warned earlier this month that it would close Lauda's base if "meaningful" cost reductions could not be agreed by 20 May. It said that costs at the Austrian unit were "running ahead" of other airlines in the group, and that the management team was putting in place a restructuring plan.
The Irish budget carrier completed the purchase of 100% of Laudamotion from NL Holdings in December 2018 and later shortened its name to Lauda.
Cirium fleets data shows that Lauda has a fleet of 27 A320s, all of which are currently in storage because of the coronavirus pandemic. Ryanair had been intending to expand the Lauda fleet to 38 aircraft this summer.

Tra l'altro non si capisce bene quali tagli ai costi si volessero fare. Lauda(motion) non arrivava dal fallimento di Air Berlin, quindi ripartendo da zero?

Hanno rilevato la compagnia, ma non potevano accettare dei contratti del personale troppo alti (che poi in realtà sono perfettamenten in linea con il settore). Infatti buona parte delle operazioni su vienna viene rilevata direttamente da una controllata di ryanair (Malta Air) che utilizza personale con contratti peggiori.

Non e' chiaro ancora quale sara' il ruolo della compagnia stessa che e' basata in ogni caso a Vienna.

Ma cosa volevano tagliare, che i piloti Laudamotion sono già quelli meno pagati in Europa e gli assistenti di volo sono in diversi casi sotto al salario minimo per legge in Austria?
Che io sappia in Ryanair hanno contratti nettamente migliori.

Onestamente non so dirti come sia andata. Comunque, sapevo che tra Authority e Lauda non correva buon sangue (a settembre Lauda aveva dato il ben servito in un colpo solo a: CTP, HT, Vice HT e CFO).

Base Vienna sono una decina di aerei, gli altri sono a PMI e DUS

Nella lettera sopra si dice che viene chiusa la base di Lauda ma i voli su Vienna continueranno e saranno operati da Ryanair che ha dei costi piu' bassi. Quindi in sostanza è un trasferimento di COA, gli unici a perderci sono i lavoratori. Bisogna capire poi cosa ne sarà dei 10A320 attualmente basati a Vienna, probabilmente verranno trasferiti ad altre basi.
C'è da dire che la guerra di prezzi che negli ultimi anni si è scatenata su Vienna sta facendo le sue vittime, prima Level che è quasi sparita del tutto, adesso Lauda e anche Wizzair ha ridotto la sua presenza, sarà contenta Austrian meno noi pax visto che per volare a Vienna ci sarà meno concorrenza e probabilmente prezzi piu' alti.

Lauda reverses closure of Vienna base

Ryanair-owned Lauda has cancelled plans to close its Vienna base after the majority of pilots and cabin crew backed a new collective labour agreement.
Services will resume on 1 July with three Airbus A320s based at the airport, rising to 10 by August. Originally, Lauda intended to base 16 A320s in the Austrian capital for the summer 2020 season, but this plan has been scaled back because of the coronavirus crisis.
"Lauda will reopen in Vienna in July with lower aircraft costs, lower airport costs, and a more efficient CLA," says the carrier.
On 29 May, Lauda said it was shutting down its Vienna base after failing to reach a pay deal with crew. The plan was for Ryanair to expand at the airport instead of Lauda, but this has now been abandoned.
The Austrian carrier says it has "confirmed there will still be some job losses among pilots and cabin crew" but that these will be "significantly reduced thanks to the weekend vote of pilots and cabin crew".
Lauda adds that 90% of pilots and 66% of cabin crew backed the new collective labour agreement.

Lauda outlines restructuring under 'survival plan'

Lauda's Austrian arm is being repositioned as a wet-lease carrier and the Ryanair subsidiary is ending the employment of crew members who did not support a new collective labour agreement, as part of a "survival plan" to secure operations in Vienna.
The airline says more than 330 flying staff members will be retained when operations resume on 1 July, but adds: "Up to 12 pilots and 82 cabin crew who did not accept Lauda’s new CLA/T&Cs document dated 28 May 2020 will receive notice of termination of employment at the end of June."
Parent group Ryanair had in May announced the closure of Lauda's Vienna base amid a labour dispute with Austrian union Vida. That decision was later reversed when an 11th-hour agreement was reached.
In a statement earlier this month, the airline said pilots and flight attendants had made "heroic efforts… which persuaded the Vida union to accept Lauda's new CLA".
Despite the new labour terms, Lauda says it still faces "substantial challenges" and cites a €600 million ($670 million) financial support package for Lufthansa subsidiary Austrian Airlines which the German group agreed with Austria's government.
"A range of survival measures necessary to face post Covid-19 competition with [Lauda's] German-owned airline competitor [Austrian]," Lauda argues.
As part of the measures, it says it will "become a wet-lease operator for other airlines", noting that "the Lauda brand will continue in Vienna".
On 16 June, Ryanair disclosed that it would take over responsibility for Lauda flights from Dusseldorf and Stuttgart, and employ Lauda's operations in the two German cities to conduct the services on a wet-lease basis until October.
Lauda's German branch and Ryanair sister carrier Malta Air, which operates bases at other German airports, are also in labour talks with the local Verdi union.
The airline says that "crewing needs" at Lauda's bases in Dusseldorf, Stuttgart and on Spanish island Majorca are "under review".
Lauda has capped its entire Airbus A320 fleet at 30 aircraft – eight fewer than previously planned – and says future deliveries have been cancelled, while leases on existing aircraft are being renegotiated. The carrier's Vienna-based fleet will be limited to 10 aircraft rather than 16.
As a result of the coronavirus crisis, Lauda estimates that the number of passengers travelling on the carrier's entire fleet in 2020 will be half its previous target of 10 million.
