In order to concentrate its efforts and make the company more efficient, Sterling Airlines will focus on three staffed bases in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo, from 1 January 2009.
Both the management and the unions of Sterling Airlines are working together to avoid dismissals.
In 2008, Sterling Airlines has expanded the company through launching 24 new routes, repositioning the company brand and introducing a new top management. However, the company must continue to keep a sharp focus on maintaining a low cost structure as well. “The aviation industry is experiencing a difficult combination of extremely high fuel prices and a declining global economy. Sterling is no exception and these developments demand actions. Sterling management has worked together with our union representatives to develop a series of measures to help combat the effects of the deteriorating environment,” says President and CEO, Reza Taleghani. From 1 January 2009, Sterling will operate three staffed bases in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo. The Aalborg, Billund, Malmö and Gothenburg bases will no longer be permanently staffed and the co-workers from these bases will relocate to the three remaining bases. As now, Sterling will continue to operate routes from these locations, however, crews will originate from the three bases in the Scandinavian capitals.
The company management and unions are working together to avoid dismissals through a series of voluntary reduction packages. “We will need to be more efficient in order to further adapt to the new operating environment. At the same time, it is important to continue to offer our customers a strong presence in the Nordics, a vast selection of routes and a state-of-the-art fleet. This demands that we gather our operations around the three central bases while allocating more resources to updating our fleet and optimising our routes. While we will reduce the number of staff as a part of this reorganization, we have a close cooperation with our unions and have worked together to create a number of voluntary plans for our co-workers. We are designing the plans to be attractive enough to attract the necessary number of employees,” says President and CEO, Reza Taleghani.
