RYANAIR CONDEMNS FRENCH ATC STRIKE

20 Mar 2016

Ryanair, Europe’s No 1 airline, today (20 Mar) condemned the selfish actions of the French ATC unions who once more caused the cancellation of hundreds of flights and delays across Europe following their 41st strike since 2009.
Ryanair has repeatedly called on the French Government and EU Commission to take action to prevent European consumers regularly being held to ransom by tiny numbers of ATC workers, who disrupt not only flights to and from France, but those overflying France, meaning ordinary travellers whose flights neither take-off from or land in a French airport are also suffering cancellations and delays.

Ryanair urged consumers to sign its Keep Europe’s Skies Open petition which calls on the European Commission and European Parliament to protect Europe from repeated blackmail and disruption by ATC unions by:
1 - Removing the right to strike from Europe’s ATC unions, in the same way that Europe’s police and military are not allowed to strike. However, European ATC workers could still join unions, organise and advance their concerns through mediation or binding arbitration, that do not involve strikes or closing skies over Europe.
2 - Allowing other European ATCs to manage flights over French airspace during ATC union strike action.
When Ryanair obtains 1m signatures, this petition will be presented in Brussels to the EU Commission and the EU Parliament who will then be forced to consider taking action to prevent these unwarranted disruptions.

Ryanair’s Robin Kiely said:
"Due to yet another French ATC strike - the 41st such strike since 2009 - we regret we were forced to cancel a number of flights on Sunday, with further flights cancelled on Monday, and delays likely. All affected customers have been contacted by email and SMS text message and advised of their options: a full refund, rebooking on to the next available flight or rebooking onto an alternative route. Those travelling on Monday should check the status of their flight on the Ryanair.com website before travelling to the airport and follow @Ryanair on Twitter for updates.

We sincerely apologise to all those affected by the unwarranted actions of these French ATC workers who continue to hold European consumers to ransom and we call on the French Government and EU Commission to take action to prevent any further disruptions. It’s grossly unfair that thousands of ordinary European consumers have their travel and holiday plans disrupted by the actions of a selfish few. We also encourage any affected customers to sign our online petition, Keep Europe’s Skies Open -http://www.keepeuropesskiesopen.com.”

Anche la l'associazione (lobby) europea A4E ha rilasciato una press release al riguardo:

European travellers taken hostage in air traffic strikes

  • A4E calls for action plan to minimise strike impact.
  • More than 10,000 flights of A4E airlines affected by strikes in 2015.

The French air traffic control (ATC) strike between 20-22 March highlights yet again the urgent need for an immediate action plan to minimise strike effects on both local traffic and overflights. Last year, more than 10,000 flights operated by A4E members were affected by 28 days of ATC strikes in Europe causing unnecessary delays and inconvenience for millions of passengers.

“The negative impact of ATC strikes on European Aviation is a key issue for our airlines and their customers. The European Commission must stand up for consumers and promote their rights. We urge all parties involved to develop and agree on an action plan and A4E will take the lead, seeking urgent working sessions with all stakeholders. We just can’t just spoil the Easter holiday break of European travellers,” said Thomas Reynaert, Managing Director of A4E.

At its launch in January this year, A4E highlighted its position on improving European Air Traffic Management. These are delivering reliable and efficient airspace by reducing the cost of ATC provision through completion of the Single European Sky and better economic regulation at EU level; ensuring that the disruption caused by ATC strikes to passengers across Europe is minimised; using new technology to make efficiency savings; and using SESAR funding to drive compliance with the Single Sky framework.

Oggi a Madrid praticamente tutti i voli erano in ritardo.

Governments should intervene to stop French Air Strike - Walsh

IAG boss Willie Walsh has called on the British and French governments to intervene as French Air Traffic Control goes on strike again.
The last two-day strike caused over 1,000 flight cancellations with more than one million passengers affected.
The new strike in France will last at least 36 hours from 19:00 CET, March 30, 2016
Willie Walsh, IAG chief executive, said: “The cynical targeting of Easter holidays by French air traffic controllers – with two strikes in 10 days – causes uncertainty and disruption for our customers and makes flight rebooking difficult as existing flights are already full.
“Flights to France and those which overfly the country are affected which, due to its size and geographic location, means major cancellations and delays.
“We urge the British government to work with the French government to minimise the impact of strike action.”
Airlines for Europe – the European airlines association comprising Air France KLM, easyJet, Finnair, International Airlines Group (IAG), Lufthansa Group, Norwegianand Ryanair says that this is the 43rd strike day in France since 2009 and it will see hundreds of flights being cancelled creating disruption and extensive delays across the continent.
“Repeated and disproportionate industrial action by French ATC unions is seriously impacting the travel plans of thousands of passengers during Easter. It is unacceptable that airlines and their customers can be repeatedly punished by these unjustified strikes. We call on the European Commission to act immediately to defend consumers”, said Thomas Reynaert, Managing Director of A4E.
The negative impact of ATC strikes on European Aviation is a key issue for A4E airlines and their customers.
“We are currently working on an immediate action plan to minimise strike effects on both local traffic and overflights. But we also need the European Commission to remain at the helm of implementing a European Aviation Strategy without disruptions and to the benefit of travellers. This must be a priority,” he added.
The French ATC strike from 20th till 22nd of March caused over 1,000 cancellations among the A4E members and was the source of 500,000 delay minutes (8,333 hours or 347 days) across all airlines operating in European airspace during the strike period. “Needless to say A4E accepts that the right to strike is a fundamental right, but one million or more passengers cannot have their travel plans spoiled again by this dispute,” confirmed Reynaert.
Last year, more than 10,000 flights operated by A4E members were affected by 28 days of ATC strikes in Europe causing unjustified disruptions to millions of passengers.
At its launch in January this year, A4E highlighted its position on improving European Air Traffic Management.
