Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Int'l) has secured Fifth Freedom traffic rights in the Ivory Coast and Cyprus following the signing of revised Bilateral Air Service Agreements (BASA) with each respective nation.
Referencing Cyprus, Cypriot and Qatari civil aviation authority representatives agreed to amend a 2010 BASA to include fifth-freedom rights on flights from Cyprus onwards to any two other EU destination (except Greece). It was also agreed that Qatar Airways and Cyprus Airways (CY, Larnaca) would conclude a code share agreement within 30 days.
Qatar Airways is scheduled to begin 4x weekly services to Larnaca on April 29. Cyprus has a similar BASA with the UAE in which Emirates (EK, Dubai Int'l) also has 5th Freedom rights on the Larnaca to Malta sector of its Dubai to Malta via Larnaca service.
Referencing the Ivory Coast, Qatar and the West African nation agreed to amend their 1996 BASA to now include provision for both Qatar Airways and Air Côte d'Ivoire (HF, Abidjan) to exercise Third, Fourth and Fifth freedom rights to intermediate and beyond points.
The Qatari national carrier does not serve Abidjan as yet with Lagos its sole West African destination.
