Pare che siano veramente messi male:

NEW HEAD OF LOT TRIES TO PREVENT NOSE DIVE

Created: 05.03.2009 13:35
Sebastian Mikosz, has been elected chairman of Poland’s national airline LOT.

He is will be in for a baptism of fire, as the problems that surround the carrier have been described as ‘catastrophic’.

“Among its many problems are losses caused by the fluctuation of petrol prices, operational issues, a surplus of work force and conflicts with trade unions,” says Tomasz Hypki, an aviation expert.

At the beginning of February, the national carrier’s losses amounted 500,000,000 zloty.

One of the possible solutions is finding new investors and operational partners. Lufthansa and rich Arabian or Asian companies are thought to be possible targets.

LOT has been facing crisis for a few years now. Entering the Star Alliance and creating the no-frills Centralwings were one of the attempts of ameliorating a difficult situation. Both were unsuccessful, however.

In 2008, LOT ordered fuel reserves for 2 years on futures trading in order to secure themselves from price increases. Surprisingly, in the meantime prices of fuel have decreased significantly . However, LOT is obliged to pay the previously arranged, higher price.

At the moment, the board of directors is talking with trade unions about mass layoffs. They have not specified the number of people to be made redundant, however.

The State Treasury has 67.97 percent shares in LOT with the remainder held by SAirLines B.V. representing Swissair, and 6.93% by employees. (un/pg)
