March 14 is Pi Day, an annual celebration of the mathematical sign pi. The holiday began in 1988, when Physicist Larry Shaw selected March 14 as the day because 3.14 represents the first three digits of pi (and, of course, because it is Albert Einstein’s birthday).

How is pi used in the air? Actuators!

An actuator is a part of a device or machine that helps achieve physical movements by converting energy — often electrical, air or hydraulic — into mechanical force.

Pi plays a big role in actuation. Actuators control the flaps that move on aircraft wings and tails or the parts that open and close valves on jet engines.

Controllers send signals to electric motors, telling them how fast they need to spin to make the actuators move.

Thank you for letting us geek out!
