Hundreds of exhibitors, visitors and conference delegates amassed today (9 April 2013) in Geneva, Switzerland, for the start of what looks to be the best Passenger Terminal Expo and Conference yet.
Visitors to the event, which is being held until Thursday 11 April, were greeted by more than 180 exhibitors from all over the world, who were showcasing the very latest innovations for the passenger terminal industry, including baggage handling, security, passenger check-in and seating solutions. This year many companies have used the exhibition as a platform to launch their latest products, services and technologies.
Visitor Karl Smith, senior project manager, Beumer Group, enthused, "This is my first visit to Passenger Terminal Expo. I have just started work on a new project for the Beumer Group, so this is all very new to me. There's loads to see here and my first impressions are very good. The exhibition provides a great networking opportunity and I am learning lots about the industry."
Alongside the exhibition is the integral Passenger Terminal Conference that is being held across the three-day event and includes presentations from around 250 of the industry’s leading figures. Topics covered include airport design, planning and development, intermodal transport, commercial development, passenger experience, self-service, check-in and baggage processing.
Delegate Joseph Romano, architect at RS&H, said he was pleased to see so many interesting topics on the bill: "The conference is very good this year, but I wish I were more than one person, as there are so many topics being covered it would be good to take in all of them. Primarily the show offers an excellent networking opportunity."
Speaker and delegate, Mohamed Yousif Al-Binfalah, CEO, Bahrain Airport Company, who will be presenting tomorrow (10 April) on Bahrain Airport's expansion and refurbishment plans, believes the exhibition and conference helps airports keep on top of industry trends. "We have a number of objectives we want to achieve by attending the conference, including networking and touching base with our peers in the industry to help us learn from their experiences," he said. Singapore Changi Airport has been named as the World’s Best Airport at the 2013 Skytrax World Airports Awards held last night (10 April) at Passenger Terminal Expo 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland.
This is the fourth time the airport has won the prestigious prize, last claiming victory in 2010.

Arconas launches Compass at Passenger Terminal Expo 2013
Arconas has officially launched Compass, its airport media tower and charging stations, at this year’s Passenger Terminal Expo, taking place at Palexpo in Geneva, Switzerland on 9-11 April 2013.
Designed by Entro, the wayfinding and environmental communications specialists, Compass is a multifunction, modular media tower designed to enhance people’s experience in public spaces by configuring with seating clusters, workstations and a range of signage and display screen options.
“Compass is a multifarious tower system that was designed to help people navigate through public spaces,” explains Pablo Reich, Arconas’ executive vice president. “The flexible tower system incorporates power sources for charging, is used for wayfinding and communications, and also acts as a workstation for passengers and airport staff.”
The media tower provides airports with a source of non-aeronautical revenue by providing three sides of advertising LCD screens that can be positioned horizontally or vertically. The screen can be used for live television, interactive content or as Flight Information Display Systems, and as passengers spend more time in the seats, airport concessions benefit from increased business opportunities, according to the company.
The towers also provide a convenient place for passengers to recharge mobile phones, laptops and other devices by incorporating Duracell Powermat and inPower Flex modules that allow recharging wirelessly or though electrical outlets and USB ports.

Public seating specialist Zoeftig is showcasing its new range of products on stand 4080 at Passenger Terminal Expo 2013, being held in Geneva, Switzerland on 9-11 April.
The company has launched its PowerHub workspace bar that includes intelligent charging, whereby the unit automatically recognises different types of devices and provides the optimal charging power necessary.
The company also launched its inFINITE Duo range, a sociable seating cluster, as well as its inFINITE Power in-seat power units and its Zenky+ range designed specifically for the US market.
Zoeftig also announced plans to open a new office and warehouse facility in Chicago as part of its ongoing strategy to extend its global reach.

World Heart Foundation at Passenger Terminal Expo 2013 to combat cardiovascular disease
World Health Networks has announced its partnership with World Heart Foundation at Passenger Terminal Expo 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland that will aim to tackle cardiovascular disease (CVD), the world’s number one killer.
The companies presented their unmanned, free-to-use, medical grade health station at the show which allowed visitors to stand 5354 to undergo a two-minute medical check using weight, height, BMI, body fat content and blood pressure measurements to understand their risk of CVD.
By joining forces the two companies will now work together to place these machines at all major airports around the globe, and have already conducted a pilot programme at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport which proved highly successful.
“People are not always aware of their CVD risk factors and tools such as the Health Stations can help inform and educate them. Through early detection of high blood pressure, which remains the leading CVD risk factor causing nine million of total deaths each year, many unnecessary deaths can be avoided,” said Dr Kathryn Taubert, chief science officer of the World Heart Federation. “Passengers travelling through airports can be informed of their blood pressure and other CVD risks. This public health service will help people have longer and healthier lives.”
“The core objective of our partnership is to tackle heart disease through easy acess, early detection education and empowerment of individuals,” continued Lon von Hurwitz, CEO of World Health Networks. “We provide this service free of charge to both airports and passengers through associated sponsorships. Airports will therefore be able to offer their customers potential life-saving facilities.”
The Health Stations include a 17-inch touch screen and an interactive information centre that allows users to find out more about the free service. To use the station, passengers simply stand on the foot plate and follow the instructions, which can be provided in multiple languages.
Once they have entered their weight, height, gender and age information, they then hold on to two metal handles, which then calculate the passenger’s BMI and body fat content. The user then places their arm in the cuff and their blood pressure measurement is taken. Once complete the machine provides a print out of the user’s vital statistics, which can be compared to the average measurements provided. It is hoped that with regular use, users will be able to identify any abnormalities in the results and consult a medical professional for advice before CVD develops.

Mercator introduces baggage tracking and management technology at Passenger Terminal Expo 2013
Mercator has introduced its newly developed baggage tracking and management technology, mBELT, at this year’s Passenger Terminal Expo (PTE) 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The technology has been designed to alleviate the industry’s baggage related pressure. In 2012, 25.8 million pieces of baggage were mishandled, of which 85% were delayed and 15% were damaged or lost, costing the aviation industry US$2.58bn. Last year, air travellers said that safely handled baggage is the second most important factor to them having a pleasant trip (source: IATA passenger survey 2012). Airlines, ground handlers and airports needed a complete baggage management suite, which will help them manage the entire life cycle of their passenger’s bags.

CONRAC to launch innovative public display series at Passenger Terminal Expo 2013
CONRAC has launched its latest addition to the dust-protected Public Display series, a 72in (183cm) screen at Passenger Terminal Expo (PTE) in Geneva, Switzerland today (9 April).
Visitors to stand 2210 throughout the three-day event on 9-11 April can see the 6172 PD, which has been designed for large-scale signage and features a low power Direct-LED backlighting that guarantees superior image performance with excellent contrast and brightness ratio. MSTS Tray Carrier launched at Passenger Terminal Expo 2013
Teknik Dokum has launched its MSTS Tray Carrier feeding trays for x-ray scanning at this year’s Passenger Terminal Expo.
Visitors to stand 5420 can see the new Tray Carrier in action and watch how it makes security check at airports faster and easier. There is no time loss for the passengers waiting for empty trays to put in their personal objects for x-ray scanning and no need for the security personnel to shuttle alongside the x-ray scanner to carry the empty trays from one end to the other by hand. Empty trays are just put into the channel of the MSTS Tray Carrier and are automatically transferred to passenger access points.
It is a maintenance free system with rigid steel frame, stainless steel panels, locker caster wheels, and long lasting quality conveyor belt driven by a noiseless electric motor.

Mercator introduces baggage tracking and management technology at Passenger Terminal Expo 2013
Mercator has introduced its newly developed baggage tracking and management technology, mBELT, at this year’s Passenger Terminal Expo (PTE) 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The technology has been designed to alleviate the industry’s baggage related pressure. In 2012, 25.8 million pieces of baggage were mishandled, of which 85% were delayed and 15% were damaged or lost, costing the aviation industry US$2.58bn. Last year, air travellers said that safely handled baggage is the second most important factor to them having a pleasant trip (source: IATA passenger survey 2012). Airlines, ground handlers and airports needed a complete baggage management suite, which will help them manage the entire life cycle of their passenger’s bags.
The launch of mBELT on stand 3125 at PTE 2013 supports the progress the industry continues to make towards getting passenger's bags to their destination on time. To date, mBELT has enabled savings of US$1.96m over the past three years, despite a 15% year on year rise in the numbers of passengers handled. CONRAC to launch innovative public display series at Passenger Terminal Expo 2013
CONRAC has launched its latest addition to the dust-protected Public Display series, a 72in (183cm) screen at Passenger Terminal Expo (PTE) in Geneva, Switzerland today (9 April).
Visitors to stand 2210 throughout the three-day event on 9-11 April can see the 6172 PD, which has been designed for large-scale signage and features a low power Direct-LED backlighting that guarantees superior image performance with excellent contrast and brightness ratio. The display module is entirely sealed and docks-on to the separate control box by means of a special connector.
A further product launch at PTE, also based on the latest low power technology, is CONRAC’s elegant new slim-bezel display. The 47in (119cm) screen uses an Edge-LED panel.
CONRAC is also presenting an innovative industrial ARM-Board based on Quad ARM Cortex A9 with embedded Linux. The tiny board, designed for integration in the Public Display series, features a power consumption of less than 10W.

L-3 to showcase ECAC CEP approved scanner at Passenger Terminal Expo 2013
L-3 Security & Detection Systems is showcasing its ProVision ATD Security Scanner, which has just received European approval following testing under the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) Common Evaluation Process (CEP), at this year’s Passenger Terminal Expo in Geneva, Switzerland.
Visitors to stand 7125 on 9-11 April can experience L-3’s ProVision ATD system, which utilises safe millimetre wave technology to automatically detect a broad range of materials, both metallic and non-metallic threats, by highlighting any anomalies on a generic mannequin, protecting passenger privacy. Advanced software processes scanned data and determines if the individual can be cleared through the checkpoint.
