AirBaltic Staves off Airport Crisis, For Now
Latvian air carrier airBaltic narrowly escaped having its flights shut down at Riga Airport on Friday afternoon by meeting the airport's demand for an upfront payment for services.
A Riga Airport press representative confirmed that airBaltic made prepayments for the next seven days, and could therefore continue its flights as scheduled, reported LETA.
On Thursday, media reported that the airport had threatened to cut off services to airBaltic at 4 p.m. Friday if prepayment was not received by noon.
The conflict stems from a long running dispute between the two parties over airport tariffs. Riga Airport filed a lawsuit against airBaltic over more than 7 million euros in unpaid fees.
For its part, airBaltic says it lodged a court complaint against the airport for more than 9 million euros in damages, claiming that the airport charges Irish rival Ryanair a much smaller tariff of only one euro per aircraft, while airBaltic pays 500 euros. A statement from airBaltic on Thursday said that the airline decided to suspend its payments to Riga Airport and demanded that the situation be resolved.
Riga Airport's press representative said that because airBaltic refused its latest settlement offer, the airport would now provide services to the airline only on a prepayment basis.
