Aegean Airlines joined the bidding for Olympic Airlines, offering a combined €170 million ($214.2 million) for OA's flight operations, MRO division and its successor company Pantheon. "The objective of Aegean and its shareholders is the creation of a more powerful Greek air company" that can compete with larger European airlines, the carrier said. It added that it would be able to take over OA within 60 days of signing a deal and that it was willing to cede some domestic routes in order to facilitate competition. US-based charter company Chrysler Aviation also reportedly reentered the bidding, joining Swissport and Greece's Marfin Investment Group, each of which is seeking specific pieces of OA

Two New Suitors for Olympic Airlines

Two more bids to buy ailing Greek state Olympic Airlines were submitted Wednesday by Greek private carrier AEGEAN AIRLINES and US charter company Chrysler Aviation. The Greek administration, on the other hand, appears determined to respect the exclusive nature of negotiations taking place with suitors MIG and Swissport until the end of the week. In fact, the state legal and financial advisors have been mandated to go through evidence on the capital sufficiency of the new bids submitted. Greek private air carrier AEGEAN AIRLINES submitted on Wednesday a bid to acquire ailing state carrier Olympic Airlines

Responding to a tender to privatize the loss-making Greek national air carrier, AEGEAN said in a statement it offered €90mn to purchase Olympic's flying operation and €20mn to buy the assets of the Olympic's aircraft maintenance base. It also intends to acquire Pantheon, a company set up by the government as a successor of debt free Olympic Airlines, offering about €60mn. AEGEAN and its shareholders, read the statement, aimed at creating a stronger Greek carrier with the necessary mass base to live up to international competition in the European airspace.

AEGEAN also pledged to undertake the project within two months after the signing of the final deal with the Greek state, thus saving operational costs of hundreds of million of euros that would burden the Greek state, in case another bidder acquired OA later on.

In the meantime, US charter company Chrysler Aviation offered €210mn to buy Olympic Airlines. The company also said it intended to offer to purchase the rest assets of OA.

OA 080:
0510 0600 SKG (Thessaloniki) - LXS (Limnos)
0625 0700 LXS (Limnos) - MJT (Mytilene)
0725 0755 MJT (Mytilene) - JKH (Chios)
0820 0855 JKH (Chios) - SMI (Samos)
0920 1005 SMI (Samos) - RHO (Rhodes)

O analogamente dall'altra parte Salonicco --> Corfù --> Preveza --> Argostoli --> Zante

Athens - After years of failed privatization attempts, the Greek government sealed a deal Friday with the country's largest buyout firm, Marfin Investment Group, for the sale of debt-ridden carrier Olympic Airlines, said Development Minister Kostis Hatzidakis. The deal involving Marfin (MIG) comes a month after the conservative government made a last-minute appeal for investors to rescue Olympic, after an international tender failed to produce satisfactory offers.
Marfin submitted a 62.4-million-euro (79-million-dollar) bid for Olympic's flight operations and technical maintenance base.
Although details of the deal were not immediately released, the government said MIG will be bound to take over the ground-handling unit, totaling 44.8 million euros, if negotiations with Swissport, a subsidiary of Spain's Ferrovial, fall through.
"All the advisors of the government have informed us that negotiations with MIG for the sale of Olympic's flight operations and technical maintenance has had a successful end," Hatzidakis said.
The Greek government said that it will still require the green light from the European Commission for the deal to become binding.
Last year, the Commission blocked an attempt by Ryanair to acquire rival Irish carrier Aer Lingus, saying that the move may destroy competition at Dublin Airport in Ireland.
The deal between Marfin and the Greek government was reportedly struck hours before MIG threatened to walk away and just as the government received two more bids to acquire the airline by Chrysler for 210 million euros, and by Greek private carrier Aegean Airlines.
Although Aegean, which is Olympic's main competitor for Greece's domestic routes, offered an attractive proposal of 170 million euros to purchase the ailing airline, many expressed fears that the sale could create a monopoly and eventually be blocked by the European Commission.
Founded in 1957 by shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, Olympic steadily declined after being operated for decades by the state, with reported losses of 450 million euros a year.
The government has spent years seeking private investors to take over the airline, but the process has been complicated by the European Commission's demand that the company repay unlawfully- distributed state aid.
The last attempt to privatize the airline was September 2008, when the government floated a tender to split the loss-making airline into three units - flying, ground handling and aircraft maintenance - to facilitate a sale.

The state says yes to "MIG"
The State and MIG have finally reached an agreement on the purchase of Olympic Airlines. Following marathon meetings yesterday, Development Minister Hatzidakis announced the agreement reached on the company's assets, technical base and flying services. A one-week extension was given for ground services in order for a commercial agreement to conclude between MIG and Swissport. Yesterday, Mr Hatzidakis pointed out that Marfin had committed itself to purchase ground services for 44.8 million euros - price announced by independent specialist - in the case negotiations with Swissport collapse. Revenue for the state will amount to 177.2 million euros.
It should be noted that the European Commission will give the green light for a final agreement to be reached between the Greek state and MIG. The EC is monitoring developments from close, appointing at the same time a special Commissioner during the negotiations.

After the Commission's approval, the privatization Bi-ministerial committee will examine the agreement in the coming days.

KKE (Communist Party of Greece) and SYN (Coalition of the Left) criticized the government for the way it had handled the issue, holding also responsible the main opposition party (PASOK).

Reactions from KKE and SYN

KKE issued an announcement, describing the agreement a crime against the Greek people, to which accomplices are the ND (Conservatives) and PASOK (Socialists) parties.

KKE holds responsible all parties supporting the EU and the privatization of air services, urging the Greek people not to accept any excuses and government arguments. It adds that the nationality of the businessman, who will be running Olympic Airlines is not important, adding that the company's privatization, irrelevant of the businessman and amount of purchase, will have the same painful consequences.

SYN hold responsible the ND and PASOK parties for the "crime of the sell-out of O.A."

"The fragmentation, liquidation and privatization of O.A. constitute a ground of clear ideological and programming convergence for PASOK and the ND parties. The disappearance of the national air carrier lies within the framework of the supervision of big European cartel interests on air services. SYN will continue struggling to avert an additional crime at the expense of the public in such a serious and strategic sector of our economy", points out.

Moreover, SYN describes PASOK's concent on privatizing O.A. absurd, adding that the privatisation of coastal navigation, tourist economy and now of O.A. create a cartel, while the new grey labour relations will give the opportunity to the new O.A. owners to profit.

"We hope that O.A. will again fly all over the world to the benefit of Greece and employees,: commented LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally).
