Expansion plans for Abu Dhabi airport

The Supervision Committee for the Expansion of Abu Dhabi International Airport has announced plans to construct a new high Passenger Terminal 3 Facility in Abu Dhabi International Airport. The anchor tenant for the facility is Etihad Airways, the nation's flagship carrier.
The Etihad Interim Terminal 3 to be built by Al Habtoor Engineering and Murray & Roberts as a joint venture and will create new opportunities to enhance Abu Dhabi's emergence as an internationally significant business travel, transfer, and tourism destination as well as catering for increased passenger numbers.
Using innovative technology will be central to the successful development of this terminals and specialists in construction, civil engineering, design/engineering, and systems integration will be called in to lend their expertise
"This is a major project innovation, and it is crucial that the frontline users of the technology understand how it will benefit them both financially and practically," said Alan Bourjeily, General Manager, Aviation Engineering Division, DPS.
"The integration of the various systems will enhance passenger care and overall terminal efficiency, and DPS is honored to have been selected to deploy the Special Airport Systems package. This demonstrates once again that we are ‘Airports Specialists,'" he added.
Special systems within the New Terminal 3 Facility, inclue Flight Information Display System (FIDS./BIDS) legacy extension, SITA CUTE System legacy extension, local departure control system (SITA LDCS) / Baggage Reconciliation System (DCS/SITA BRS) legacy extension, Public Address, Paging, & Voice Announcement System (PA/VA), Automatic computerized Flight Announcement System (FAS) , the GPS Master Clock System (MCS), Master Antenna Television System (MATV), Telephone/Voice Structured Wiring System (SWS) Network, Local Area Network extensions, Wireless RF Signal Propagation Network, all supported by DPS-installed structured cabling plant.
"We are happy to award this contract to DPS due to their experience in airport systems and their professionalism in meeting the challenge of such projects. This is the result of continuous collaboration" said project Director Ramsay Abbassi of Al Habtoor Engineering/Murray & Roberts LLC J.V. The award is to be revealed on the first day of Aviation Procurement Expo, 19 - 21 March 2007 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

Abu Dhabi to build free trade zone

Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) is planning to construct a free trade zone at Abu Dhabi International Airport.
Occupying a built up area of over 7 million square metres, the ambitious project will offer investors a range of facilities and services. ADAC plans to place all amenities under one roof and intends for all the required facilities to become integrated to ensure that investors receive centralised service.
"The creation of a free zone marks a milestone in Abu Dhabi's plans to establish itself as a dynamic business centre. The facility will take advantage of Abu Dhabi International Airport's strategic geographical position on the crossroads between the east and the west, and the large-scale economic development of the Emirate," said HE Khalifa Al Mazrouei, chairman and managing director, ADAC.
"Developing a free zone at Abu Dhabi International Airport is an important part of the development and expansion of the airport. It will ensure that Abu Dhabi International Airport will become a thriving cargo and business hub as well as ensuring our goal of increasing non-aeronautical revenues," he added.
ADAC was incorporated in March 2006 to spearhead major redevelopment in the Emirate's aviation infrastructure. Its creation was part of an ambitious restructuring initiative launched by the government of Abu Dhabi, aimed at delivering better services to support the Emirate's long-term economic and tourism strategies and to help build a more vibrant economy that attracts and promotes private sector investment.
The airport expansion will allow passenger traffic to grow beyond 40 million per year from the current seven million, while cargo capacity will be boosted from 150,000 tonnes per year at present to two million tonnes. The project includes construction of a second runway and two new terminals.

Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) is seeing major progress in its AED 26 billion ($7.08 billion) programme for the redevelopment of the capital's International Airport, ADAC announced yesterday.
Work on Abu Dhabi International Airport is progressing according to schedule to meet the deadline, with three facilities set to come on line in the first half of 2008.
These include a second runway, a third passenger terminal that will add another five million to the airport's passenger capacity, and an air traffic control tower able to handle up to 70 takeoffs and landings per hour.
Major projects are heading toward timely completion, said ADAC's planning manager James Robinson, speaking at the Dubai Airport Expo.
The plan for Abu Dhabi International Airport is set to allow passenger traffic to rise in phases to beyond 40 million passengers per year from the current seven million.
Cargo capacity will be boosted to 2.5 million tonnes per year.
The project for the airport also includes new cargo facilities, an airport free trade zone, and retail and maintenance facilities.
Phase one of the airport free zone - set to occupy 7 million square metres and establish the capital as a business centre - will be up and running in June 2008.
The airport as recently witnessed unprecedented increase in passenger traffic, registering 25% growth in the first quarter of 2007 over the same period last year.
Passengers handled by the airport in that time reached a total of 1.575 million, compared to 1.255 million in Q1 2006.
