Tokyo''s Narita Airport plans to increase annual slots to 300,000

TOKYO, Dec 26 (KUNA) -- Narita International Airport near Tokyo hopes to rival giant Asian hubs by increasing its arrival and departure slots to 300, 000 annually from the current 200,000, media here reported Wednesday. Currently, airlines of more than 40 countries are awaiting authorization for an increase in their slots at Narita Airport, about 65 km northeast of Tokyo.
The plan by its airport operator, the Narita International Airport Corp., is also aimed at maintaining Narita's status as an international hub over Tokyo's Haneda Airport, which is Japan's busiest airport and has been angling to become the main gateway to the capital, the Asahi Shimbun said, citing the company source.
Narita Airport has two runways. However, due to noise pollution concerns, it cannot authorize aircraft to take off and land from the two runways simultaneously. To increase the capacity, the operator plans to allow simultaneous landings and takeoffs by altering the takeoff route from one of the runways by 15 degrees in an easterly direction and in the altitude of the approach path, the newspaper said.
By easing the daily cap on landings and takeoffs, the airport estimates it will result in up to an annual 150,000 slots each for landing and takeoff without extending the runways.
According to a government estimate, the Tokyo metropolitan area will experience a shortage of 36,000 landing and takeoff slots for international flights in fiscal 2017, even if Tokyo's Haneda Airport expands its overseas connection. (end) mk.bz.
