German Chancellor Merkel and Bavaria's Prime Minister Stoiber basically agreed that the federal government will pay 50% of the estimated construction costs (1.85 billion EUR), while Bavaria will pay 25%. The last 25% will be payed for by the German Railway company (whole will operate the train), the European Union and the airport company. The latter point is still uncertain because the city of Munich, who owns 23% of the airport company annouced to "put up a fight".
While the legal process of the Maglev is already in its final stages, the financing seems finally to be tackled as well. Construction is expected to commence in 2008 with entry into service around the 2011-2012 timeframe. Journey time will be 10 minutes to the central station.
Interesting times ahead in MUC, other current projects include:
-construction of the third runway (commissioning hopefully around 2012)
-extension of T2 with a satellite terminal (around 2011-2012)
-reconstruction of T1 and central area (not decisions yet)
-construction of the 3rd suburban train line from Munich
-connection of the airport to the regional train network.
