TOKYO, March 1 (Reuters) - China Eastern Airlines, the country's third-largest airline, is in talks with the "Oneworld" airline alliance to be a member carrier, the alliance's managing partner said on Thursday.
The Oneworld alliance, led by AMR Corp.'s (AMR.N: Quote, Profile , Research) American Airlines and British Airways (BAY.L: Quote, Profile , Research), hopes to expand its network in the growing Chinese market by recruiting an airline on the mainland.
Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways (0293.HK: Quote, Profile , Research) is a member.
"We will continue to look for expanding our network in China, and yes, we are talking with China Eastern at the moment," oneworld Managing Partner John McCulloch told a briefing, adding the alliance was also in talks with other carriers.
The chief executives of the oneworld members held a joint briefing in Tokyo on Thursday to mark Japan Airlines Corp.'s (9205.T: Quote, NEWS , Research) inclusion from April. Royal Jordanian [RJA.UL] and Hungary's Malev [MALV.UL] will also join the alliance from April.
Other oneworld members include Finland's Finnair (FIA1S.HE: Quote, Profile , Research), Spain's Iberia (IBLA.MC: Quote, Profile , Research), and Chile's LAN (LAN.SN: Quote, Profile , Research)(LFL.N: Quote, Profile , Research).
