Heightened security at airports in Italy
Bulletin issued : 25/03/2011 09:00:00
Severity:medium Category:security
Please be advised of the following development(s) that may impact your travel programme:
Italy - 25 Mar 11 - Security has been heightened at major airports across Italy amid rising fears of a potential terrorist attack due to Italy's military intervention in Libya. Italy forms part of a five-member coalition also including France, US, UK, and Canadian forces which started to launch air strikes on targets in Libya as part of the enforcement of a UN-mandated no-fly zone commencing on 19 March. Authorities in Italy are concerned that the escalation of the conflict and the influx of refugees from Northern Africa have elevated the risk of terrorist attacks in the country. Heightened security measures at airports include increased police presence throughout airport complexes, particularly at access areas, and additional attention to security checks of baggage and passenger documents. Travellers in Italy should note that these increased security checks may cause travel delays and, as such, should allow extra time for transiting airports. Furthermore, travellers are advised to remain vigilant and to report all suspicious persons, packages and/or vehicles to the local authorities.
