KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL, Amsterdam) has deferred the delivery of two B787-9s as pressure mounts on the Dutch carrier to enhance its fiscal discipline through cuts in spending.

Bloomberg news quotes KLM spokesman Robbert Veldhuizen as saying that while two of the carrier's ten B787-9s on order from Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) have been delayed, the delivery of the first remains on track for the last quarter of the year. He did not specifiy which slots had been affected.

The airline has also been forced to scrap over 22 flights from its summer schedule following disagreements with its unions over proposed new collective labour agreements. Earlier this year, the chairman of KLM's cabin crew union VHKP, Bob van der Wal, said the airline was looking to boost productivity by 20% by 2020 while reducing its labour costs by 10%.

"At present, KLM is negotiating with its trade unions to arrive at new collective labour agreements," the airline said. "As yet, we have not reached an agreement."

As management is unwilling to recruit additional personnel, it is reportedly seeking to increase staff productivity this summer by cutting staff holiday entitlements. As such, because of the impasse, the carrier is no longer able to guarantee the launch of flights to Edmonton Int'l, Canada, which was scheduled to begin on May 5, while planned increases to existing destinations such as Rio de Janeiro Int'l, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta and various Chinese cities have also been shelved. ch-aviation
