JetBlue Readies to Roll Out the Royal Treatment for All with Flights to London as Airline Strengthens Relevance in New York and Boston with First European Destination

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU), New York’s Hometown Airline® and the largest airline in Boston, today announced it intends to launch multiple daily flights from both cities to London in 2021 (a) – the carrier’s first European destination. The new routes, which will be served by Airbus A321LR single-aisle aircraft with a reimagined version of Mint, will mark the first-ever transatlantic service offered by the award-winning airline. JetBlue is evaluating which London airports it will serve.

JetBlue rails against protectionism in transatlantic markets

JetBlue chief executive Robin Hayes has called on European regulators to be "bold" and intervene to ensure that new entrants to the transatlantic market can obtain the slots and market access needed.
The US carrier is planning to begin services from New York Joh F Kennedy and Boston to London in 2021, but has not yet disclosed which of the UK capital's airports will be used, and has highlighted the difficulty of securing the necessary slots.
Speaking at the UK Aviation Club in London today, Hayes said it was time for regulators to create the conditions whereby smaller players and new entrants could "thrive", by "prioritising access" to airport slots and infrastructure.
Remedies to encourage greater market access should be made a condition of allowing incumbents to "get bigger" through joint ventures, he argues.
Hayes rails against the market strength of global immunised joint ventures, contending that the potential to co-ordinate schedules and pricing while sharing revenue represents a form of "legalised collusion" which "wipes out" competitors. Such market power also discourages new carriers from entering the market, he complains.
In the transatlantic market, he estimates, some 75% of seats are controlled by joint ventures.
"Giants" in the market have proven capable of fighting "very hard to defend their patch", he suggests, pointing to their "perverse battles" with Norwegian, Air Italy and the Gulf carriers as they seek to "protect their market position".
He describes London as the "ground zero" of transatlantic competition, noting the commercial tie-ups between British Airways and American Airlines on one hand, and Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic on the other.
Hayes urges regulators to demand a "greater divestiture of slots" than those historically sought as a precondition of approving JVs.
While stressing that he is not against joint ventures per se, Hayes says they should not be allowed to "grow endlessly and unchecked".
In his view, more needs to be done to identify whether the consumer benefits claimed by carriers when applying for immunised approval actually do "flow down to consumers".
One of the "biggest challenges" is that joint ventures are approved for an "unlimited period of time", he opines, adding his proposal that time limits be imposed.
Hayes does see encouraging signs of change. He cites the example of the US Department of Transport's approval, several years ago, of a joint venture agreement between Aeromexico and Delta Air Lines, which came with a condition that there must be a review after five years.
The approval was also, he recalls, accompanied by the release of 24 slots at Mexico City airport. JetBlue was able to secure some of these to begin new services.
Hayes says that were JetBlue awarded the slots it needs to start its planned transatlantic services, this would have a "profound and dramatic effect" on fares. FG

*
to launch multiple daily flights

JetBlue Airways today announced it has expanded its presence in the transatlantic market with new, nonstop service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and London Gatwick Airport (LGW).
LGW joins LHR as JetBlue’s entry points into the United Kingdom.
The first customer-carrying JetBlue flight from the U.S. touched down at Gatwick just before 8 o’clock this morning, local time. The flights – which operate four times weekly in October, then daily onward from November – arrive well timed for the long-awaited easing of U.S. entry requirements for travelers from the U.K. and other European destinations.
Schedule between New York (JFK) and London Gatwick (LGW)

JFK – LGW Flight #43LGW – JFK Flight #44
7:50 p.m. – 7:55 a.m. (+1)12:00 p.m. – 3:33 p.m.

Gatwick is the second busiest U.K. airport and provides JetBlue with an important presence where it can attract a new base of travelers. JetBlue will operate from the North Terminal.
Airbus Aircraft
The A321LR platform – offering the range of a wide-body but with the economics of a single-aisle aircraft – allows JetBlue to effectively compete, with award-winning service and low fares on flights between the U.S. and London. JetBlue converted 13 aircraft in its existing A321 order book to the LR version in April 2019 with the ability to convert more. Additionally, JetBlue has converted another 13 aircraft in its existing order book to the Extra-Long Range – or XLR – version of the A321.
The A321LR allows JetBlue to tap into new long-haul markets, like London, that were not previously accessible with the airline’s existing fleet. The LR’s range of up to 4,000 nautical miles is made possible by three additional center fuel tanks and the aircraft delivers 30 percent fuel savings and nearly 50 percent reduction in noise footprint compared to previous generations of aircraft. JetBlue is also the global launch partner for the new Airspace by Airbus cabin, bringing long-haul style to the A321 for the first time ever.
JetBlue’s A321LR is powered by two Pratt & Whitney GTF engines. The GTF engine, with its revolutionary geared fan technology, is transforming aviation by delivering game-changing economic and environmental performance. The Pratt & Whitney GTF engine also incorporates advances in aerodynamics, lightweight materials and other major technology improvements.
