jetBlue Airways (B6, New York JFK) has already begun studying the possibility of launching transatlantic flights though the origin of such flights would likely be Latin America CEO Dave Barger has said.
Interviewed by Ireland's Independent newspaper, Barger said that despite JetBlue's studies, an entry into the market would not come any time soon. He noted that existing northern transatlantic routes were not necessarily in need of more entrants adding that future longhaul routes could involve partnerships to areas "such as Africa and the Middle East."
Among the possible partnerships are a deepening of ties with Aer Lingus (EI, Dublin Int'l) with which it currently has a codeshare agreement he said.
Barger also poured cold water on Ryanair (FR, Dublin Int'l) CEO, Michael O'Leary's claims that his carrier could offer transatlantic flights for as little as EUR10 (USD13.50).
"There's just no way," said Mr Barger. "There's such hype that comes out of certain airlines."
Founded in 1999, JetBlue is an American, low-cost carrier that offers more than 600 daily flights to more than 60 cities in the US, Central America, the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Bermuda.
