Crash: Air Class SW4 near Flores Island on Jun 6th 2012, aircraft missing
An Air Class Lineas Aereas Swearingen SA227-C Metro on behalf of DHL, registration CX-LAS performing freight flight CXLAS from Montevideo (Uruguay) to Buenos Aires Ezeiza,BA (Argentina) with 2 crew, was climbing through about 4500 feet to FL080 in icing conditions about 2nm south of Flores Island (Uruguay), about 10nm south of Montevideo's Carrasco Airport, about 5 minutes into the flight just before 20:00L (23:00Z) when radar and radio contact with the aircraft was lost. The aircraft did not land at any airport reachable, the fuel would have been exhausted by now.
Uruguay's Air Force have launched a search for the aircraft, weather conditions hamper the search however.
Initially Uruguay's Air Force reported the aircraft involved was an Aeromas Embraer EMB-110 registration CX-MAS. Later reports identify an Air Class Swearingen SA227-C Metro registration CX-LAS or CX-CLA, Air Class operates 4 Metros CX-LAS, CX-CLA, CX-CSS and CX-CLS, all in DHL colours.
ATC recordings identify the aircraft as CX-LAS using the callsign CXLAS for the flight. The aircraft was cleared for takeoff from runway 24 and to climb to FL100, winds from 240 degrees at 25 knots, QNH 1023 hPa, during acceleration tower advised a gust was arriving at 27 knots. After checking in with departure the crew requested FL080 and was cleared to climb to FL080 and turn right to SARGO waypoint. The crew acknowledged "turning right to SARGO", which proved to be their last transmission. Subsequent calls by ATC using short ("Lima Alpha Sierra") and complete callsign ("Charlie X-ray Lima Alpha Sierra") remained unanswered.
