APA-Moscow (Russia) A Russian cargo airliner carrying peacekeepers and military equipment for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) crashed into Lake Victoria in Uganda on Monday, killing all on board, the Deputy Director of the African Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Vladimir Nikoleyevich Fedotov told APA in Moscow.
He said the Illuyshin-76 owned by the Aerolift airline with cargo for the Somalia-based Ugandan peacekeepers fell down for unknown reasons into Lake Victoria and sunk, soon after departing from Entebbe International airport on Monday.
Fedotov confirmed that the airline crew, two Russians - the commander and a second pilot, and two Ukrainians - the flight engineer and the navigator - died in the air crash.
He explained further that there were other people on board, including three high-ranking officers from Burundi and Uganda. The cause of the crash was under investigation.
A total of 3,500 servicemen from Uganda and Burundi making part of the African Union contingent are based in Somalia, according to official sources. Air crashes are not unusual in Africa, where many airlines fly old or outdated aircraft - often from the former Soviet Union - and infrastructure is often not properly maintained. Some African airlines are banned from flying in Europe
