Incident: Easyjet A320 at Malta on Jan 21st 2013, engine shut down in flight

An Easyjet Airbus A320-200, registration G-EZTF performing flight U2-8824 from Malta (Malta) to London Gatwick,EN (UK), was climbing out of Malta's runway 31 when the crew reported the failure and shut down of the left hand engine (CFM56) and returned to Malta for a safe landing on runway 31 about 20 minutes after departure. Emergency services checked the left hand engine on the runway, the aircraft subsequently taxied to the gate.
A passenger reported repeated thud like sounds from the engine, the captain subsequently announced technical problems prompted their return to Malta.
