Il nuovo aeroporto di Doha aprirà in gennaio 2014

Con un anno di ritardo, il 30 Aprile finalmente aprira' HIA, il nuovo aeroporto di Doha:

Hamad International Airport ‘soft opening’ set for April 30

Doha’s long-delayed Hamad International Airport (HIA) will open April 30 with a “soft launch,” eventually switching 10 carriers to the new airport.
The Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) told 10 airlines—Bangladesh Biman Airlines, flydubai, Air Arabia, Iran Air, Air India Express, Yemenia, Pakistan International Airlines, Nepal Airlines, Syrian Air and Pegasus Airlines—they can expect to move operations to the new airport on the last day of April.
National carrier Qatar Airways is believed to be making the switch to the two-runway HIA on May 27, with other major carriers moving to HIA over the next few months.
The Qatari capital’s new airport had been due to open April 1, 2013—the most recent of several planned dates—but the opening ceremony was called off just hours before the first aircraft was due to touch down, apparently due to a failure to meet new safety and security requirements.
In March, Abdul Aziz Mohammad Al-Noaimi, chairman of the steering committee of what was previously known as the New Doha International Airport, said HIA would undergo a phased opening by the middle of this year.
According to a statement on the QCAA website, he said: “Despite delays, which were a result of changes requested during construction to expand the project, as well as challenges we faced regarding some contracts, we are on track for a mid-year opening.”
He added, “HIA will be larger and have greater capacity on its opening day than initially envisioned. Due to increased transit growth in Qatar and the region in the past few years, these modifications were necessary to deliver an airport with a capacity of 30 million on opening day.” The airport will eventually have an annual capacity of 50 million passengers.

Qatar Airways trasferirà tutti i suoi voli all’Hamad International Airport il 27 maggio.

Nearly there … Qatar Airways flight QR7450 touches down at Hamad International Airport in Doha, signalling the start of commercial operations at the new airport. A water arch salute was duly arranged for the flight which carried numerous dignitaries. Posing for a commemorative photo are: Minister of Transportation His Excellency Mr. Jassim Al Sulaiti; Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Airways, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker; Chairman of the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, His Excellency Mr. Abdul Aziz Mohammad Al Noaimi; and members of the New Doha International Airport Steering Committee.
On 30 April, a Qatar Airways A320 flight hosting local dignitaries became the first aircraft to officially land at the newly-opened Hamad International Airport, the new airport serving Doha, which has been built next to the existing airport, but on land that was 60% reclaimed from the sea. The first scheduled flight to arrive at the airport was flydubai’s service from nearby Dubai, which arrived just before noon. flydubai is one of 10 carriers that have moved their services from Doha International Airport to Hamad International Airport with immediate effect. The other carriers are Air Arabia, Air India Express, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Iran Air, Nepal Airlines, Pakistan International Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Syrian Airlines and Yemenia. Qatar Airways, as well as all remaining carriers, plan to move their services over to the new airport from the end of May.
[h=2]Doha sees 14% growth in Q1[/h]Last year Doha International Airport handled 23.3 million passengers, an increase of 9.9% on the figures for 2012. This makes it similar in size to Oslo (23.0 million) and Fort Lauderdale (23.6 million). Using anna.aero’s SVID calculator, the airport’s seasonality profile scores an “excellent” 0.45. In the first quarter of 2014 the airport’s traffic has grown year-on-year by 13.8%

The new airport will initially be able to cope with up to 30 million passengers, rising to 50 million upon full completion. Since the beginning of 2013 the following new services have been added at Doha International Airport.

Of the 16 new routes launched by Qatar Airways from Doha in the last 16 months, 10 have been operated, at least initially, with narrowbody aircraft. Apart from Qatar Airways, only Cathay Pacific Airways and Pegasus Airlines have launched flights to the airport. Since Qatar Airways joined the oneworld alliance on 30 October 2013, the Cathay Pacific service helps add additional capacity between two major oneworld hubs.
[h=2]787-8s being used to launch new services to Edinburgh and Tokyo[/h]A further seven new routes have so far been announced as starting between now and the end of July, two each in the US and Europe, and one each in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Two of the routes will be launched by the airline’s growing fleet of 787-8s, while a further three will be started using narrowbody A320-series aircraft.

A total of 11 commercial services (plus the return ‘next door’ of Qatar Airways’ VIP flight) were scheduled to depart Hamad International Airport on its first day of operation. Already putting a dent in the airport’s punctuality statistics was the delay of Yemenia’s first flight.

Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Int'l) has announced it will officially move to its new home at Doha Hamad Int'l on May 27, 2014. Located four kilometres from the current Doha Int'l, Hamad Int'l features 138 check-in counters across 5 islands, comprising 108 counters for Qatar Airways’ Economy passengers and all other airlines; 14 seated check-in areas for Qatar Airways’ First Class passengers; and 16 counters dedicated to Qatar Airways’ Business Class passengers.

In addition, the new 600'000sqm passenger terminal complex will operate 41 contact gates, which will increase to 65 once the airport opens Concourses D and E with six of the gates being fully dedicated to servicing the Airbus A380 aircraft, of which Qatar Airways has 13 on order with the first delivery expected in early June.

After continuous delays, the USD15.5billion facility finally opened to scheduled passenger flights on April 30.
