Airbus received Category IIIb approval from EASA to utilize Thales' MLS precision approach and landing system on A320 family aircraft. British Airways will be the first to use MLS, implementing it at London Heathrow on A320s and A321s. "MLS uses microwave signals that are less susceptible to interference. . .from other aircraft moving on the airport surface or buildings than the current [ILS]," Airbus said. "Airports equipped with MLS will be able to increase their traffic flow during bad weather conditions, no longer having to reroute aircraft when visibility is low." The manufacturer said the approval is the result of "a significant joint development" by itself, Thales, BA and UK and French airport and air transport authorities. Both the onboard MLS receiver and airport MLS ground station are manufactured by Thales.

Molto interessante, ormai ero convinto si sarebbe saltati dall'ILS al GPS senza passare per l'MLS, ma evidentemente mi sbagliavo! Brava BA [:304]

non penso che il GPS ora come ora e in futuro, riesca ad eseguire le operazioni MLS che sono molto simili a quelle dell’ILS e riportano l'aereomobile ad un approccio diretto all’asse della pista con una determinata inclinazione..vedremo....

Thales said yesterday that it has received Category IIIb approval from EASA to utilize its MLS precision approach and landing system. Airbus said last month that EASA certification had been granted for Thales' MLS system on A320 family aircraft and that British Airways would be the first to implement it at London Heathrow in 2008. Thales' announcement yesterday appeared to signal across-the-board certification for all aircraft types, but did note that BA would be the first to use it.

"This application of the MLS technology is a world-first and means that more flights will be able to land safely in difficult weather, where air traffic is dense and where interference from buildings or objects around the approach to the airport is extensive," Thales said. The technology, which employs a microwave signal and has been under development since the 1980s, is dependent upon both a ground station and an onboard system. A multimode receiver onboard the aircraft computes position and determines the ideal approach path using a C-Band digital signal sent by MLS ground transmitters.
