BERLIN – 05 February 2019 – Germania Fluggesellschaft mbH, its sister maintenance company Germania Technik Brandenburg GmbH as well as Germania Flugdienste GmbH filed for insolvency at Amtsgericht Berlin-Charlottenburg on Monday, February 4, 2019. Flight operations will be terminated in the night from February 4 to February 5. Germania’s employees have been informed. Swiss airline Germania Flug AG and Bulgarian Eagle are not affected by this step.

Karsten Balke, CEO Germania Fluggesellschaft mbH, said: “Unfortunately, we were ultimately unable to bring our financing efforts to cover a short-term liquidity need to a positive conclusion. We very much regret that consequently, our only option was to file for insolvency. It is of course the impact that this step will have on our employees that we regret the most. All of them as a team always did their best to secure reliable and stable flight operations – even in the stressful weeks behind us. I would like to thank all of them from the bottom of my heart. I apologise to our passengers who now cannot take their Germania flight as planned.”

Those Passengers affected by the suspension of flight operations who booked their Germania flight as part of a package holiday can contact their respective tour operator in order to organize substitute carriage. For passengers who have booked directly with Germania, there is unfortunately no entitlement to substitute carriage.

Germania’s short-term liquidity need emerged mainly due to unforeseeable events such as massive increases in fuel prices last summer and the simultaneous weakening of the euro against the US dollar, considerable delays in phasing aircraft into the fleet and an unusually high number of maintenance events that the airline’s aircraft required were major burdens for the company.

More than 30 parties interested in Germania assets

Germania's administrators have received expressions of interest from more 30 parties for the assets of the insolvent leisure carrier.
Preliminary insolvency administrator Rudiger Wienberg says there has been a "high level of investor interest" in the German leisure carrier, which filed for insolvency earlier this month. Many of the entities are "strategic investors", which he describes as "companies in the industry".
Of the more than 30 interested parties, 10 have signed confidentiality agreements and are currently conducting due diligence.
Wienberg says he presented the provisional committee of Germania's creditors with a report on the interim status of the investor process on 14 February. The creditors "unanimously voted in favour of an investor solution", he says.
The "core" of Germania, consisting of a reduced fleet operating a concentration of "lucrative routes", could be hived off as a "profitable" business by an interested investor, says Wienberg.
"Not all Germania routes are a loss business," he notes, adding: "The bankruptcy process offers investors the opportunity to take on the profitable part of the business with profitable slots and no legacy."
Wienberg says the "majority" of the relevant lessors continue to work with the administrators of the Berlin-based carrier, with 22 of Germania's 27 aircraft "still available and ready for immediate use". He says that in the case of an investor coming forward, most of the airline's operations could be resumed at "short notice". FG

Kosovo businesswoman takes over Germania Flug

The Swiss subsidiary of the recently-bankrupt Germania has been taken over by Albex Aviation, owned by businesswoman Leyla Ibrahimi - Salahi, who is also the CEO of tour operator Air Prishtina. Germania confirmed that Ms Ibrahimi - Salahi has taken a 100% stake in the company, including the 40% share previously owned by the bankrupt Germania. Air Prishtina, which is one of the largest air service providers in Kosovo and Macedonia, has an extensive contract in place with Germania Flug. The Swiss airline was not affected by the bankruptcy of its parent company earlier this month and has continued normal operations. Germania Flug maintains a fleet of three aircraft, including two Airbus A319s and one A321. It also boasts orders for three A320neo jets, which are due to be delivered next year.
