Egyptair A320 at Nairobi on Jun 6th 2012, veered off runway on landing
An Egyptair Airbus A320-200, registration SU-GBG performing flight MS-849 (dep Jun 5th) from Cairo (Egypt) to Nairobi (Kenya) with 123 passengers, landed on Nairobi's runway 06 at 03:36L (00:36Z) but veered right off the runway and came to a stop about half way down the runway with all gear on soft ground. No injuries occurred. The passengers disembarked via mobile stairs onto the runway and were bussed to the terminal.
The airport was closed until about 12:00L until the aircraft was moved back onto paved surface and towed to the apron. Flights arriving in the meantime were diverted to Mombasa (Kenya) and Entebbe (Uganda).
An aviation professional observing the incident from the ground reported the aircraft appeared to land at an unusually high speed though he was aware of the higher speeds above ground due to the high altitude of the aerodrome, all landing lights including the nose wheel landing light were aligned with the longitudinal axis of the aircraft (editorial note: the nose wheel was properly turned straight for landing). The aircraft appeared to float before it touched down with a thump at the end or just past the end of the touch down zone. The aircraft rolled out, the observer didn't initially recognize the aircraft had veered off the runway near taxiway L (the last taxiway off runway 06 to the right) until after the aircraft did not move and the crew requested a "follow me vehicle and a tow bar".
Nairobi offers a single runway 06/24 with 4115 meters/13500 feet length at an elevation of 5330 feet/1625 meters.
