Etihad to take off to China

Tuesday, 03 July 2007

Etihad Airways is set to fly to China next year </u> as it moves forward in creating a hub between Asia and the UAE, its CEO told Bloomberg.

The service from the UAE national carrier will start in the first quarter of 2008, "most likely to Shanghai</u>," James Hogan said in an interview yesterday.

"China is going to be a big market," he added.

The Abu Dhabi-based airline is also set to begin flights later this year to Singapore, Kathmandu in Nepal</u>* and Milan, in a bid to establish the UAE capital as a hub between Asia, Europe and the US.

Etihad said last month it plans to fly to new cities across North America after clinching a deal for 12 new Airbus aircraft that would expand its network to the continent. The airline currently flies to New York and Toronto.

The airline placed a $2.2 billion order with Airbus in June for four A340-600s, five A330 passenger aircraft and three A330 freighters.

The new aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2008 and 2011 and will increase the UAE national airline's fleet to 46 aircraft, helping it to develop its ambitious plans.

The airline is aiming to fly to 70 cities from Abu Dhabi by 2010; its network currently stands at 43 global destinations.

Etihad's move to add China to its schedules comes as more and more of the region's companies and investors are looking to diversify into the Asian markets.

According to a Reuters report last week, Arab companies have traditionally explored Europe and North America for acquisitions but are recently lured into Asia by rising realty values in Asian cities.

@jtstream
