DHL Considers Rail Connection for new Air Hub
Deutsche Post will be relying on the railway to link up its new Leipzig/Halle air hub. As part of its current negotiations with Deutsche Bahn AG, DHL is looking to secure the use of high-speed freight trains to connect the air freight center in Leipzig/Halle (to begin operations in 2008) with Hamburg at speeds up to 200 kilometers per hour (kph). At this speed, the train could make the trip from Hamburg to Leipzig/Halle in two and a half hours.

Up until now, the comparatively slow speed of freight trains was the deciding factor against the move to railroad. But according to Michael Reinboth, Project Head of the European air hub in Leipzig/Halle, locomotives can be obtained on today’s market that achieve speeds of 200 kph. Passenger trains, however, would need to be modified. For this, Deutsche Bahn plans to retrofit retired IC (InterCity) cars so that the large aluminum air cargo containers can be rolled onto and off the cars.

In addition to the Hamburg-Leipzig connection, a logistics triangle that could run high-speed freight trains between Leipzig/Halle, Frankfurt am Main and Kassel would also be needed. And Deutsche Bahn would urgently need to upgrade its East-West route between Halle and Erfurt, said Reinboth. “Night-time traffic on the rail lines is light, and this is when we want to use them.”
