Delta orders 15 more Airbus A321s
Delta Air Lines has placed an order for 15 Airbus A321ceo aircraft for delivery from 2018 to replace older narrowbodies due for retirement.
Delta has also selected CFM International CFM56 engines for the new aircraft, all of which will have fuel-saving Sharklet wingtips and many of which will be delivered from Airbus’ brand-new A320 family assembly line under construction in Mobile, Alabama.
Delta operates a fleet of 126 A320 family aircraft and 32 A330 widebodies. The order, announced Monday, brings Delta’s backlog to 45 Airbus A321s and 10 A330s.
“The A321’s economic efficiency and product offering relative to the aircraft they will replace ensures that this opportunistic transaction will enhance profitability, customer satisfaction, and shareholder value for Delta,” Delta VP, fleet strategy and transaction, Nathaniel Pieper, said.
“This opportunistic aircraft order continues Delta's disciplined, capital efficient approach to fleet renewal. These new airplanes will improve the flying experience for our customers and benefit our shareholders,” Delta CEO Richard Anderson added.
Delta's first A321 will begin service in early 2016, with 20 first class seats, 23 extra-legroom seats and 149 seats in economy. Each A321 will feature Wi-Fi, in-flight entertainment with live satellite TV and on-demand options, and 110v power at every seat.
