Flexjet Boosts Supersonic Bizjet Plan with Aerion AS2 Order

Fractional-share provider Flexjet signed a firm order today at NBAA 2015 for 20 Aerion AS2 supersonic business jets for delivery beginning in 2023. The deal, worth $2.4 billion (2015 $) at list prices, is backed by a nonrefundable deposit.
Aerion chairman Robert Bass declined to say how many total orders or letters of intent the company possessed or how many it would need to put the AS2 into production. “When an organization like Flexjet makes a decision, it is after much thought and study,” he said. “And we are very pleased they have selected the Aerion AS2.”
Bass also declined to say if Airbus had invested in the company. Last year Aerion and Airbus announced a technology-sharing agreement. Bass did say that, under the terms of that agreement, Airbus could manufacture components of the AS2.
“Being on the leading edge of something that is supersonic is a very exciting thing to do,” said Flexjet CEO Kenn Ricci. “We have a lot of confidence in Bob [Bass] and his team to bring this project to market. We are going into the international market; that was one of our goals when we bought Flexjet two years ago. As we go into that market we realize that there is not a ‘one size that fits all’ for our clients.”
Ricci said Flexjet has programs where customers can buy access to larger and more capable aircraft on a selected basis, and that is where he sees a supersonic business jet fitting the bill for his company and its customers, being able to access a supersonic business jet when speed matters.
“We did run this by our clients and we were amazed by the interest we had from very large corporate customers,” Ricci said, adding that before this consultation Flexjet had only intended to order 10 AS2s.

Aerion’s Tough Choice

May 26, 2016William Garvey | ShowNews

The slow evolution of Aerion Corp.’s supersonic business jet will gain speed sometime this summer or fall as the 14-year-old company finally selects an engine. Co-chairman Brian Barents describes making that decision as the pacing item of the project, and exhibits a certain resignation to the choices near at hand.
The search process has come down to two candidate powerplants in the 15,000-lb.-thrust range – Aerion is withholding their identities, but says the manufacturers are obvious – yet neither is ideal for the purpose. For supersonic flight, the company says a jet engine with a 1:1 or 2:1 bypass ratio would be best, but these will likely have to deliver 4:1 or more. And the aircraft’s balanced field length and range will suffer, the latter by 100-200 mi., which is the rub.
Blame noise, of which supersonic engines make lots. Yet that must be minimized under today’s Stage IV requirements, with which the aircraft must comply. To do so, those engine cores will have to be shushed some with a fan. The requirements are also why the AS2 will almost certainly be a trijet.
Helping accelerate the selection are Stage V’s even more restrictive terms, which become effective at the end of next year and will affect any aircraft weighing more than 121,000 lb. While the Aerion is supposed to come in under that figure, its designers want to submit an application to the FAA for a type certificate before that deadline…just in case.
Under current rules, the Stage IV standards would then continue to apply to it. However, once the application is delivered, the clock starts ticking, and Aerion would have five years from that day to type certificate award, or all bets are off.
Aerion CEO Doug Nichols acknowledged those compromises to a gathering Monday evening, but in the end says, “This airplane will exist.”

A sorpresa entra in scena Boeing.

Boeing Partners with Aerion to Accelerate Supersonic Travel

• Aerion’s AS2 will be the first supersonic business jet to market

• Boeing to provide financial, engineering and industrial resources

CHICAGO, February 5, 2019 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] today announced a partnership with Aerion, a Reno, Nev.-based company pioneering next-generation supersonic aircraft. As part of the agreement, Boeing made a significant investment in Aerion to accelerate technology development and aircraft design, and unlock supersonic air travel for new markets. Terms ofthe deal were not disclosed. Boeing will provide engineering, manufacturing and flight test resources, as well as strategic vertical content, to bring Aerion’s AS2 supersonic business jet to market. The AS2 is designed to fly at speeds up to Mach 1.4 or approximately 1,000 miles per hour. With the ability to fly upto 70 percent faster than today’s business jets, the AS2 will save approximately three hours on a transatlantic flight while meeting environmental performance requirements. The aircraft is slated for first flight in 2023.“Boeing is leading a mobility transformation that will safely and efficiently connect the world faster than ever before,” said Steve Nordlund, vice president and general manager of Boeing NeXt. “This is a strategic and disciplined leading-edge investment in further maturing supersonic technology. Through this partnership that combines Aerion’s supersonic expertise with Boeing’s global industrial scale and commercial aviation experience, we have the right team to build the future of sustainable supersonic flight.”Founded in 2003 to develop new, more efficient aerodynamic technologies for supersonic aircraft, Aerion introduced its AS2 12-passenger business jet design in 2014. The company unveiled the AS2’s GE Affinity engine design in 2018.“Aerion is the industry leader mapping out a successful, sustainable return to supersonic flight,” said Tom Vice, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Aerion. “The AS2 is the launch point for the future of regulatory-compliant and efficient supersonic flight. Together with Boeing, we’re creating a faster, more connected future with tremendous possibilities for enhancing humanity’s productivity and potential.”Boeing NeXt works with industry partners and regulatory agencies to lead the responsible introduction of a new mobility ecosystem. The division’s portfolio includes prototyping activities and programs that will shape the future of urban, regional and global mobility. These programs include autonomous air vehicles and passenger-carrying hypersonic aircraft.
