The last workday for Terminal 1
Flights will take off and land at Terminal 1 of Budapest Airport for the last time today.
The last two flights tonight will be the Wizz Air flight to Bari (at 20:25) and the Germanwings service to Stuttgart (at 21:30).
As of tomorrow, 30 May 2012, all airlines will relocate to Terminal 2.
Budapest Airport has been forced to close Terminal 1 primarily due to the bankruptcy of Malév. The loss of the Hungarian national carrier and the 330% increase in the airport operator’s land tax burden resulted in a financial situation where Budapest Airport had no choice but to implement a drastic cost-cutting program. This included a mass redundancy, the suspension of the approximately 10 billion HUF investment portfolio planned for this year (37% reduction) and the closure of Terminal 1.
Today all flights will depart from and arrive at Terminal 1 as normal. The last two aircraft returning to Budapest according to the current schedule will be Wizz Air flight W6 2210 from London Luton and flight W6 2342 from Rome Fiumicino at 23:55. Once passengers have disembarked and their baggage has been unloaded, the two aircraft will be towed to the Terminal 2 apron, and the early morning flights will operate from there. As of Wednesday 30 May 2012, all airlines will depart from and arrive at Terminal 2.
The passengers of all five low cost carriers moving over (easyJet, Germanwings, Jet2.com, Norwegian and WizzAir) will depart from Terminal 2B (that is where they should report for check-in), with arrivals continuing to be separated according to the Schengen - non-Schengen split; passengers and baggage arriving from Schengen countries will use Terminal 2A, those from non-Schengen countries will be accommodated in Terminal 2B.
Another factor which played a part in Budapest Airport’s decision on the relocation was that Terminal 1 was no longer able to handle the increased low cost traffic on its own. According to the schedule, the low cost carriers using the airport will launch no less than 11 new flights during the summer peak season (6 by Wizz Air and 5 by Ryanair). Most of these will operate during the period after 06:00, which would have been impossible to accommodate at Terminal 1.
The passengers of Budapest public transport company BKV and of state railway operator MÁV are also being informed of the closure; Budapest Airport, in cooperation with the two ground transport service providers, has placed placards at the Nyugati (Western) railway terminal, the Kőbánya-Kispest and the Ferihegy railway stations and at the stops of the number 200E bus. As of tomorrow, loudspeaker announcements will also be made on both buses and trains to warn air passengers that they should get off at Terminal 2, or, in the case of the railway service, change to the 200E bus. Budapest Airport is also informing travelers via its website and Facebook page, with the affected airlines also disseminating the necessary information to their passengers.
