Saudi Gulf Airlines has placed a $2 billion order at list prices with Bombardier for 16 CSeries aircraft, with options for 10 more, as it looks to launch later this year or in early 2015.

The announcement was made at the Bahrain Air Show, with the Bombardier aircraft due for delivery between the end of 2015 and early 2016.

Samer Majali, president of the Abdul Hadi Al-Qahtani Group and former Gulf Air boss, said the company planned to lease six aircraft until deliveries of the CSeries start.

“Saudi Gulf will be launched once we have the technical license from the civil aviation authority,” Majali was quoted as saying.

The launch of the airline was announced last year, and Saudi Gulf Air plans to operate both domestic and international flights. Its international network is expected to be focused on cities in the Middle East and Indian subcontinent.
