Airlines need to raise fares by 15% to 20% just to break even at current fuel prices, Delta CEO Richard Anderson said Tuesday.
"An airline ticket has got to reflect the full cost of fuel," Anderson said, adding that such an increase was likely to depress demand and prompt carriers to further trim their flight schedules.
Cost-cutting measures "have largely been exhausted," Northwest CEO Doug Steenland added.
Steenland and Anderson were in Washington to meet with lawmakers on hearings about their proposed combination.
Since Dec. 20, carriers have raised fares nine times, according to BestFares.com, and many have also raised fees for checking a second bag and other amenities.
United became the third large carrier to report a quarterly loss due largely to soaring fuel costs, following American and Continental. The cost of jet fuel in New York last Tuesday was $3.73 a gallon, compared with about $2.06 a year ago.
United also said it is cutting flights and 1,100 jobs. Delta and Northwest report results today, while US Airways reports tomorrow. Southwest is the only large airline to have reported a profit.
United owner UAL lost about a third of its market value yesterday after reporting the $537 million loss. It was UAL's biggest loss since it emerged from bankruptcy in 2006 and worse than Wall Street expected. The stock plummeted 36.7%, or $7.88, to $13.55.
