AirAsia X applies for US traffic rights; eyes Hawaii during 4Q

AirAsia X
(D7, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) has officially set its plans to commence flights to the United States in motion with the recent application to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for a Foreign Air Carrier Permit as well as Route Exemption.

The application says the AirAsia (AK, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) long haul subsidiary is looking to engage in scheduled foreign air transportation of persons, property and mail from any point or points behind Malaysia, via Malaysia and intermediate points, to any point or points in the United States and beyond.

AirAsia X says it is planning to start flights from Kuala Lumpur Int'l to points in the United States beginning later in the year. Its initial proposed route is a 4x weekly service to Honolulu via Osaka Kansai, Japan using A330-300 machinery. The flight is scheduled to launch on November 1.

Last week, the founder and chairman of the AirAsia Group Tony Fernandes said his firm would also make a reappearance in Europe later this year alluding to what he termed a "sexy" destination.

AirAsia X seeks partner for European feeder flights

AirAsia X (D7, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) is looking at potential partners to feed its European routes when it resumes operations to the continent in 2018, following the arrival of its first of 66 ordered A330-900neos. Speaking to Routesonline, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Benyamin Ismail said both easyJet (U2, London Luton) and Ryanair (FR, Dublin Int'l) are considered as possible options as they are closest to the carrier’s model.

“We are looking at the whole Europe opportunity and how it fits into our network jigsaw. We have succeeded in growing across ASEAN by establishing a presence in many markets, but this is not feasible in parts of Europe where major rivals are already well established. Once we fly back to London, we will look to find a partner that day as setting up an AirAsia (AK, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) in UK would be difficult”, Ismail said.

Earlier this year, Norwegian (DY, Oslo Gardermoen) founder and CEO Bjørn Kjos said AirAsia would be a "perfect match" for his airline, adding that the two budget carriers could complement each other's operations with Norwegian's European traffic feeding into AirAsia's Asian operations and vice-versa.

AirAsia X’s CEO denied that the carrier will commence services to Europe during the fourth quarter of this year after an announcement was made on its website last month that it would operate a daily Kuala Lumpur Int'l-Barcelona El Prat via Istanbul Atatürk return service using A330-300 equipment. Ismail explained that the information was released to test how future route announcements are made.

The AirAsia subsidiary ended flights to Europe back in 2012 citing high fuel prices, "exorbitant" taxes, and weak travel demand. Back then, it used its now retired fleet of A340-300s to serve Paris Orly as well as London Stansted/London Gatwick (at different times).

Thai AirAsia X to add routes in 2018 28 Aug 2017

Thai AirAsia X (TAAX) looks set to spread its wings boldly next year as restrictions imposed by the global aviation audit agency since mid-2015 are expected to be removed.
The country's first long-haul
low-cost carrier (LCC) will then begin to add three to four new Airbus A330-300 jets and inaugurate regular flights to Eastern Europe, also ramping up its existing services to Japan and South Korea.
This would be a major upgrade for TAAX, whose expansion plan was mothballed for two years as a result of the red flag placed on Thailand's aviation safety by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The red flag forbid Thai-registered airlines from launching new routes to foreign countries or changing the aircraft types rather than those already in service on existing routes.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has spent the past two years addressing the "significant safety concerns" raised by ICAO, which is expected to remove the red flag in October this year, if not sooner.
ICAO is due to conduct an audit on CAAT, the agency upon which the safety deficiency was levelled, rather than airlines, on Sept 3.
"We are readying our growth plan once the red flag issue is over," TAAX director and founder Tassapon Bijleveld told the Bangkok Post.
After the red flag is removed and clearance is secured from the European Aviation Safety Agency, TAAX will commence regular services from its Bangkok base at Don Mueang airport to Eastern Europe.
He did not specify the countries in the region which TAAX plans to serve, but cited Poland,
Czech Republic, Austria, Croatia and Hungary as possibilities. Mr Tassapon described Eastern Europe as not too competitive with high market potential.
"We are not looking at major European cities like London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Paris, which are highly competitive with little chance of making money," he said. "Realistically, embarking on Eastern European flights would take six months," meaning services could begin the second half of next year.
TAAX also intends to boost frequencies on its existing routes to Japan's Narita and Osaka, and Incheon in South Korea. It also wants to resume its short-lived regular service to Sapporo.

Fernandes told reporters that when two more leased jets arrive in April 2019, the Thai arm will launch new flights from Bangkok to Prague, Vienna and Stockholm.
