Air Asia X is set to introduce a new service from London Stansted Airport to Kuala Lumpur early next year, with fares starting from £350 return.
The airline had hoped to launch the service- which will operate six times a week- before Christmas, but an Air Asia X spokesman told The Telegraph that delays had been caused due to difficulties in finding suitable aircraft.
"It is looking good, we are just finalising negotiations," Air Asia CEO Tony Fernandes told the newspaper.
Mr Fernandes added that he plans to exploit the lack of competition on routes between the UK and Kuala Lumpur - currently only served by national carrier Malaysia Airlines.
He said that record fuel prices have failed to deter his plans, in spite of his optimism, however, he acknowledges that a planned £300 fare had to be revised upwards.
Air Asia X is targeting business travellers to fill a front cabin of 58 premium economy seats to offset the lower-priced economy seats at the back of the aircraft.
Sir Richard Branson currently owns 20 per cent of Asia X, which is a subsidiary of Malaysia’s biggest no-frills airline, Air Asia.
Air Asia offers more than 40 onward connections from its base in Kuala Lumpur.
