Air Seychelles, which haltedall services to Europe two years ago, will return to the continent with plans to beef up its regional network as part of what it describes as a “significant expansion” of its international schedules.
In February 2014, Air Seychelles will launch a 2X-weekly Mahé-Paris Orly service, via Abu Dhabi using a two-class, 254-seat Airbus A330-200.
The Indian Ocean island group’s national carrier dropped flights to Paris, Rome, Milan and London in late 2011 and early 2012, citing weakened demand and increased competition from Gulf-based carriers for its decision.
One of those carriers, Etihad Airways, took a major stakein Air Seychelles, plus a five-year management contract in January 2012. The infusion from the growing Abu Dhabi carrier, together with governmental funding, has improved Air Seychelles’ financial position, enabling it to restore the European route.
Air Seychelles codeshares on 14X-flights weekly to Paris-Charles De Gaulle with equity partner Etihad.
Air Seychelles’ new regional network plan, subject to approvals, will see significant expansion of its operations in the Indian Ocean in the fourth quarter of 2014, following delivery of an Airbus A319.
There will be new services to Antananarivo (2X-weekly), Reunion (2X-weekly) and Mumbai (3X-weekly) as well as an increase in services to Abu Dhabi from 7X- to 11X-weekly, offering a double daily service with Etihad.
