Nota di Pieter Elbers, Presidente e CEO di KLM sui risultati della compagnia olandese:
KLM scores record result in 2017

“Our results for 2017 confirm that we are on the right track. Thanks to the efforts of all KLM staff and the loyalty of our customers and partners, KLM achieved a record operating result (COI) of EUR 910 million in 2017. This result was enhanced by our improved operating margin, which rose from 6.9% to 8.8%. The improvement of EUR 229 million is largely driven by higher unit revenues, which were mainly fuelled by favourable market developments. Our employees will also benefit from these improved result, with profit-sharing figures even higher than they were last year. The 2017 results confirm that the strategy we launched in late 2014 – to cut costs on the one hand, while investing on the other – has proved successful. However, this does not imply that we can sit back. We have our house in order, but our competitors are building skyscrapers. That is why we need to keep growing and investing, so that we have a hand in shaping the game".

Per contrastare la prevista avanzata di Ryanair in Francia, AFKL sta pianificando una crescita flotta per Transavia France che va oltre il tetto massimo di 40 a/m imposto dai sindacati francesi. Vedremo se i sindacati saranno malleabili.

Air France-KLM eyes expanding Transavia France’s fleet

Air France-KLM has started looking at how it could expand formerly loss-making Transavia France’s fleet beyond the 40 aircraft it is limited to by an agreement with labor unions. It hopes the subsidiary could help it stave off intensifying competition from other LCCs in the French market.
“We have started the process of considering the development of Transavia France beyond the 40 aircraft, with the objective of regaining a strong position including on routes from (French) provincial cities to Europe where low-cost competition is particularly strong,” Air France-KLM chief executive Jean-Marc Janaillac said. Air France-KLM’s full-year 2017 results, released last week, showed the low-cost subsidiary (which also has operations in the Netherlands) earning an operating profit and growing its passenger numbers.
Transavia has 73 Boeing 737-700s and 737-800s in total, including 29 aircraft within its French operation. It has plans for a further four aircraft to arrive in 2018 for its French operation. An agreement with Transavia France’s labor unions currently caps the French operation’s growth at 40 aircraft by 2020—meaning it could only take seven more aircraft beyond the four scheduled to arrive this year.
Transavia posted an 11.3% year-over-year (YOY) increase in passengers to 14.8 million in 2017, with capacity up 10.5% and RASK rising 6.8%. Its operating profit for the year was €81 million ($100 million), up from breakeven in 2016.
“We have supported the development of our low-cost airline Transavia, and today we are happy to note that the airline is operating at costs that are entirely comparable to its low-cost competitors in Europe, making it a real driver of competitiveness for the group,” Janaillac said. “The year 2017 demonstrated Transavia’s potential and our objective is that Transavia continues to support group growth in point-to-point traffic in 2018.”
A group spokesperson added: “Transavia is currently focused on realizing its objectives, as part of a road map we have charted together. As for extending its scope after 2020, we are going to examine the company’s positioning in excess of 40 aircraft as we are aware of Transavia France’s growth potential.”
Competition within France is growing, both from the TGV high-speed train services and from other LCC competitors.
Ryanair, which previously was prevented from basing aircraft in France because it did not recognize unions, has now changed that stance and said in January it was talking to French regional airports and hoped to have aircraft based in France by winter 2018 or summer 2019.
The Irish LCC has said it could have around 30 aircraft based in France across four bases within the next 3-4 years, doubling its traffic in France, where it currently has just a 6% market share.

Strikes pinch Air France as loss widens in Q1

Air France-KLM has said that ongoing strikes in France took a toll in the first quarter and will impact full year profits as it waits for the results of a staff vote over the pay disputes.

The airline said on Friday that operating income had fallen by €118m in the first quarter compared to a loss of €33m in the same period last year.

"This decrease is mainly explained by the strikes at Air France with a negative impact of around 75 million euros and by the fuel price increase," said Air-France KLM in a statement.

Due in part to the ongoing strikes, the carrier also said that "full year 2018 operating result is expected to be notably below 2017."

Last week, Air France unions called for fresh strikes even as the airline began balloting its staff on the stoppages in a vote that could lead to the resignation of its chief executive.

“If the result is negative, I do not see how I could stay at the head of Air France,” said Jean-Marc Janaillac, Air France-KLM chief executive, when announcing the vote, which aims to put an end to strikes that have already cost the company close to €300m.

The results of the non-binding vote are due at the end of Friday.

Pubblicati i risultati H1 2018 per il gruppo.

Totale gruppo AFKL - perdita netta di €159 mln

Un riassunto da FG sui risultati Q3 del gruppo:

The group's network carriers suffered a €76 million fall in third-quarter operating profit, to €810 million, but it points out that at constant currency there would have been a rise of €14 million.
It says routes to North America and Asia showed a "strong performance", but demand out of Brazil and Argentina was hit by currency deprecation in those countries. Passengers numbers rose about 2%, to 23.4 million.

Transavia's operating profit was up €5 million to €178 million, though revenue growth fell to 4.5% from 9.3% in the same quarter in 2017.

Air France-KLM highlights Transavia France’s performance in particular, with capacity growing 17% and higher unit revenues boosting operating margin by more than 30%. Transavia's passenger numbers rose 4.1% to 5.1 million.

The operating profit of the group's maintenance business meanwhile fell €5 million to €77 million.

Air France-KLM is forecasting a 2-2.5% increase in passenger capacity for its network division across the full year.

"The global context remains uncertain given the current geopolitical environment and rising fuel price trends," says the group. It estimates that its fuel bill will rise by €500 million in 2018 and €900 million in 2019.

The SkyTeam member puts its full-year investment at €2.4-2.6 billion, up from a previously indicated €2-2.5 billion, citing a "shop-visit capitalisation adjustment" required under IFRS accounting standards and the decision to buy rather than lease engines.

Il nuovo AD sul ruolo critico delle alleanze (senza Alitalia):

Air France-KLM's chief executive Ben Smith sees its "strong alliances" as critical to making it one of Europe's "top airline groups".
Briefing analysts on 31 October, Smith said that, since taking up his role earlier this year, he had met with most of Air France-KLM's partners around the world, and that this had confirmed his belief in the strength of the group's "international anchorage".
He asserts that the group has the "strongest joint venture" with Delta Air Lines across the Atlantic, a partnership now being enhanced with Virgin Atlantic.
The group is also "very close" to finalising a South America-focused joint venture with Air Europa, says Smith. It already has a "strong" relationship with China Eastern Airlines. FG
