AFI KLM E&M to add 787 to its MRO portfolio

Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance confirmed it will expand its service offering to include the 787, adding the Dreamliner to a Boeing aircraft MRO portfolio that currently includes 737 Classics/737NGs, 747s, 757s, 767s, 777s and MD-11s.

The MRO provider's parent company, Air France KLM Group, is believed to be close to placing an order for up to 100 787s and/or Airbus A350s. The extension of AFI KLM E&M'scapabilities to the 787 should not be viewed as confirmation that the pending order will be comprised exclusively of Dreamliners, AFI KLM E&M Executive VP Peter de Swert noted."We have decided to go in the market of the 787 now and when the A350 [gets closer to EIS] we will be taking the same approach," he told reporters during a briefing at the Paris Air Show. "We have always invested in new generation products. We will not let our leadership position go."

AFI KLM E&M will eventually provide all three MRO service segments on the 787: Airframe, engines and components. As it will take at least five to six years before the first GE Aviation GEnx or Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines need serving, the company will start with component repair and overhaul followed by airframe service, de Swert said. "We are actually in the market right now with proposals for 787 component services," he explained. "We hope to announce a first order in the next few months."
