Aer Lingus triple routes boost
07 May 2008
BELFAST International Airport has welcomed the arrival of three new routes as Aer Lingus today announced its winter schedule for 2008/09.
Munich, Milan and Lanzarote have been added to the network out of Belfast bringing to 34, the number of direct scheduled international destinations available from the international airport.
Airport managing director, John Doran, said; "We are pleased to further enhance Northern Ireland's economic potential.
"The addition of Italy's second and Germany's third cities to the extensive international route network from Belfast International Airport signifies more landmark progress and adds further substance to the Aer Lingus' route network from this region.
"At a time when there has arguably never been a greater need for companies here to exploit their export potential we are giving them access to Europe that has never been available before."
Belfast International will see almost 6 million passengers use the airport this year and is in the middle of a multi-million pound development programme which has already increased the apron space for the addition of future aircraft and which will see a gradual refurbishment of the terminal building.
"We are giving Northern Ireland, indeed the northern half of the island, the international airport it deserves - more destinations for those who fancy a holiday or a weekend break and for the economy, an economic dividend derived from the potential created by the further expansion of the route network as well as the many commercial activities which feed off an international airport.
"We are very excited about the future and we anticipate continued route development over the next six months."
Along with the new routes additional weekly flights to Malaga and Rome have also been added. The other destinations making up the winter timetable are London Heathrow (three times daily), Paris (daily), Amsterdam (daily) and Barcelona (four days weekly). Flights to Munich and Milan will operate on three days a week (and can be booked from Monday, May 12) and Lanzarote on two days a week.
