Passenger traffic was boosted by expansion of Etihad's operations.Passenger traffic at Abu Dhabi's international airport grew 26% in the first six months as government-owned Etihad Airways expanded its network, the airport company said on Thursday.
Around 3.07 million passengers used the airport in the first half, compared with 2.41 million in the year-earlier period, the Abu Dhabi Airport Company said in a statement. Cargo volumes increased 34% to reach 27,589 tonnes.
"The record growth the airport has achieved in the first half of 2007...is largely driven by the expansion of Etihad Airways,"</u>[8D]
it said.
Etihad plans to double its destinations to 70 by 2010, the airline's acting chief executive said in October.
Abu Dhabi, the world's sixth largest oil exporter, is spending $6.8 billion on expanding its airport. The airport's capacity will be expanded to 20 million passengers a year in 2010 and 500,000 tonnes of cargo a year, the airport authority said last year.
