Delta Airlines Jet Diverts To Shannon
A transatlantic jet was forced to divert to Shannon Airport on Tuesday after a passenger on board fell ill.
Delta Airlines flight DAL-245 was en route from Fiumicino in Rome to New York's JFK airport with 313 passengers and crew on board at the time.
Shortly before 3.00pm, when the jet was about 300 kilometres south of Cork, the crew contacted air traffic controllers at Shannon to notify them of their intention not to proceed with their transatlantic crossing and to divert.
The captain of the Airbus A330-300 reported that a woman on board had fallen ill and that he wished to declare a medical emergency and reroute to Shannon.
The pilot confirmed that he would be making an 'overweight landing' so airport crash crews were placed on standby as a precaution.
Two units of the local authority fire service from Shannon were also sent to the scene while two units from Ennis were mobilised to a designated holding point adjacent to the M18 motorway near Dromoland.
The jet touched down safely at 3.40pm however fire crews remained with the aircraft to ensure the braking system did not overheat during the emergency landing.
Paramedics and a doctor were standing by at the terminal building to assess the patient before she was transported by ambulance to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick for treatment.
After the passenger's baggage was removed and the jet had refuelled, the flight was able to continue its journey to New York at 5.20pm.
Last Thursday, an Austrian Airlines flight from Toronto, Canada to Vienna in Austria also diverted to Shannon with medical emergency.
