An Alitalia Airbus A320-200, registration EI-DSB performing flight AZ-812 from Rome Fiumicino (Italy) to Tel Aviv (Israel), was on approach to Tel Aviv about 180nm from the airport when radio contact with the aircraft was lost. Fighter aircraft were scrambled which intercepted and escorted the Airbus A320. Shortly before landing at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport the crew was able to resume radio contact, the flight was cleared to land and landed safely.

Checks by maintenance showed the communication equipment of the A320 had malfunctioned.
